locate with worldcat

At the moment, it appears that the "locate" buttom brings the user to the George Mason University Library.

Would it not be interesting if one also could locate the holdings of a given work via worldcat?

Cheers,

Raf
  • Locate uses OpenURL resolver.

It auto-detects the resolver of some libraries.

You can also set it in preferences.
  • I agree, I would like to be able to link the 'locate' button to worldcat so that I could see with the click of a button where the closest copy of a given work is to be found. I looked at the OpenURL resolver under preferences but I don't see a way to set this to use worldcat. If there is a way, I'd be grateful to know it
  • You can change your reslover by pasting in a different resolver URL in your preferences pane. For more info check out http://www.zotero.org/blog/making-better-use-of-zoteros-locate-button/

and for a list of resolvers see
    http://www.zotero.org/documentation/openurl_resolvers

OCLC maintains a resolver gateway that will utilize whatever resolvers it detects you have access to. You might find that it fits your needs. http://worldcatlibraries.org/registry/gateway
  • Since I collect a lot of citations from pubmed I would like the locate button be able to go back into pubmed to view it again. Is there any way to do this?
    Bear
  • From my understanding Pubmed does not have a OpenURL resolver, so no. With that noted, if you use your institutions resolver the pubmed link should show up as one of the top places to find the given article.
  • We'll be expanding the Locate button into a menu supporting OpenSearch in future versions, and you'll be able to add PubMed as an option.
  • I am new to Zotero, and I am also web-stupid. I am trying to create a list of several hundred books that I own. The fastest way to do this is to type in the ISBN number and then hit the Locate button. This works fine, but when the book appears its title is in sentence case, not title case. That is, only the first word is capitalized.

Another problem is that WorldCat lists the book, but also usually says "x editions." Then I have to look at all the editions to find which one I have. Every edition has a unique ISBN number (or is supposed to if the publisher followed the rules), so why does WorldCat not just show me my book?
  • You can recase text by right clicking on a title in the left pane, choosing "Transform Text" and choosing the case you want to use. I'm not sure why WorldCat is asking you to pick from different editions.
  • Thanks for the response.

Sadly, I cannot figure out what you mean. In the Zotero pane I have a box for collections on the left (My Library), the items in My Library appear in a middle box, and when I select one of them the right pane displays Info, Notes, Attachments, Tags and Related.

I can right-click on an entry in the middle pane, but there is no Transform Text option. All I see is Add Note, Attach snapshot of Current Page, Attach Link to Currrent Page, Duplicate Selected Item, Delete Selected Item from library, Export Selected Item, Create Bibliography from Selected Item, and Generate Report from Selected Item.

Can you be more specific where the Transform Text option is?
  • Trevor meant the right pane, not the left pane.
  • Ah. Now I see the Transform Text option. Thanks.

Now if I could just figure out why it pops in numerous ISBN numbers when I searched (Locate button) on just one ISBN number.
  • I think this is a WorldCat feature:
