Copy, Cut and Paste

I am fully confused, I can not Copy (also Cut and Paste) my files and collections. what is the procedure?
Thanks.
  • what exactly do you want to do?
  • Hi Adam

Actually I want to copy some files (via right-click or drag) from one collection to another. In addition, collections itself can not be copied (In the same manner we do in Windows Explorer).
So I have some trouble with Zotero in organizing my files and folders (collections).

    Thanks
  • Collections are not folders but if you drag-and-drop (left-click) an item from collection A to collection B, this item should appear in A and B.
    Documentation here: http://www.zotero.org/support/collections_and_tags
Dragging from one collection to another doesn't move the reference, since collections are not folders. The dragged item should appear in the new collection as well as the old one (the same as if you drag a song between playlists in iTunes).

  • Yes that is right, but what about files inside a collection?
  • Do you mean attachments ?
  • As I mentioned, in a collection nothing like right-click-copy can be found. In addition dragging of files over collections leaves attachments in original collection.
  • Zotero doesn't have the same right-click options as Windows Explorer, that's correct. Could you take a step back and explain _exactly_ what you want to do? Go step-by-step and pretend we're dummies. I'm still not sure I understand.
  • Sorry, I'm not sure to understand. :(

There's right-click->"Duplicate item" but it creates a different item (and should be used in specific cases such as multiple chapters of a book).
Collections are like playlists : they are not folders. When you add an item to a collection, it is not removed from its other collections (it's still the same item though, not a copy or a duplicate). Actually, at the moment, you can't add an item to a collection and remove it from another in a one-click : that will change in the future.
In addition dragging of files over collections leaves attachments in original collection.
Attachments should be visible under their item in all collections.
