“Style Error: [Journal of Transport Geography]”

This style should include issue numbers for journal articles, but currently does not: http://www.elsevier.com/journals/journal-of-transport-geography/0966-6923/guide-for-authors#68000

For example,
Bhat, C.R., Guo, J.Y., 2007. A comprehensive analysis of built environment characteristics on household residential choice and auto ownership levels. Transportation Research Part B: Methodological 41, 506–526.

should be

Bhat, C.R., Guo, J.Y., 2007. A comprehensive analysis of built environment characteristics on household residential choice and auto ownership levels. Transportation Research Part B: Methodological 41(5), 506–526.
  • Thanks. Will take a while to fix - supposedly all those Elsevier styles should be the same, but here that's not the case.
  • Look at: Harvard - Educational Review . (It is very close)

You can look through the other styles:

Click on the "Zotero Styles Repository" link.
  • Thanks, very much. I'll try that. I looked into editing the style, but it's going to take me a little while to figure out the code.

Is there a convenient way to import styles from EndNote or Reference Manager styles? Both are generally provided by the Elsevier journals that I use.
  • no, it's not possible to import Endnote or RefMan styles. Since we get the data for styles directly from Elsevier (via Mendeley which uses the same styles) I wouldn't be surprised if those had the same problems, though.
    You've seen this for editing?

I don't think that there is any way to convert RM or EndNote styles to CSL styles. Because those styles are proprietary and owned by Thomson Reuters, I have doubts that a conversion utility will be possible. But I'm strictly an observer here. Someone could be working on this independently. However, there has been much wishful thinking on this forum and on Mendeley, Papers, and Sente forums as well.

  • (as per Dan, the lawsuit - which Zotero won - isn't actually the reason this is no longer possible. It's just that it wasn't worth it because the results weren't good enough (and by now there are more CSL styles than Endnote ones)

At the recent Special Libraries Conference in San Diego, I talked with several Elsevier representatives. Among other things, I asked about required journal styles being available in CSL. Two of the reps immediately knew what I was talking about even though I didn't mention Mendeley. They said that all journal citation style requirements will be available in CSL soon. I wasn't able to get a commitment about how soon except that it should be before the end of this year. One hinted that it could be much sooner than that. "Full integration" with Mendeley is expected ASAP (whatever that means).

We chatted about how impact factors are influenced by accurate citations and I pointed out that there is research that shows that inferior references will be cited if it is inconvenient to cite the better references. They also said that Elsevier is doing very focused work to improve their product's metadata and the ease of importing good metadata to authors' computers so that it can be used for manuscripts submitted to other publishers journals.
  • Carlos Pina of Mendeley has mentioned that they have a new list with style data that should be implemented for CSL soon. But my sense is that Elsevier isn't actually aware of small differences in citations styles such as the one here.
  • fixed this, so the style is now independent.
