Cannot Create Bibliography Even After Reading Past Discussions

I am trying to create a bibliography after inserting footnotes into 5 chapters of my dissertation. I have installed the Word Plugin, and when I hit create bibliography it gives me an error that says "You must insert a citations before performing this operation."

I read the previous threads that tried to handle this problem. When I created a new citation in the document, it created a bibliography of just that citation - not the other documents.

I am in Zotero 3.0/Word 2007.

If anyone has any additional suggestions beyond what's been discussed before that would be helpful. Thank you!!! Anne
  • Could you describe what you're doing in a bit more detail? E.g. those 5 chapters - were they in separate files before? Did you ever create bibliographies for those? And any other potentially relevant detail.
  • Adam,

Thanks so much for responding. I have not created bibliographies before today - I've just used Zotero to create foonotes. Today, I tried both creating a bibliography in individual chapters and in one merged document and in neither case was I able to make a bibliography from the footnotes except when I created a new one.

  • If you can't create a bibliography in individual chapters, that's unfortunately not a good sign - it means that Zotero doesn't recognize any of the citations in the document.
There are three ways I can think of how this might have happened:
    1. You didn't insert the citations using Zotero's Word plugin - i.e. if you just create citations in ZOtero itself and paste them into the Word document that wouldn't work

    2. You saved the document in an unsupported format - e.g. saving the document as .rtf would have removed all Zotero citation information. Also, if you used LibreOffice or OpenOffice on that same document that could have happened.

    3. You clicked the "Remove Field Codes" button - that seems rather unlikely, since it warns you quite sternly, but I'll mention it for completeness sake.
  • Adam - Thanks -

No, I didn't insert the citations with Zotero's word plugin. Is there any way that I can still create a bibliography even though I didn't have the plugin at that time?

    Thanks!

    Anne
  • No, sorry. Footnotes that you just copy&pasted aren't recognizable for Zotero as citations - they're just like any other text.
Your only options would be to either create the bibliography manually from Zotero (i.e. place all items you cite in a collection and then select them all --> right-click --> Create bibliography from selected items
    or
to replace all the manually inserted footnotes with citations inserted the Zotero plugin.

Re-inserting live Zotero citations in a document is not as bad as it may seem. I converted a 350 page document from Reference Manager citations to Zotero (about 500 references and 950 citations). I spent no more than 4 hours. During the reinsertion process I found two very embarrassing errors that I might not have seen without this extra proofing step.

I recommend that you make a copy of your current document, and use that copy for your work. I also recommend that you print your document and use the printed copy as your gold standard.

Apologies to the forum readers who have seen my comments about this before.
  • Dear Adam,

Thanks for reading my notes. I am just new to zotero and happy to know that this thing will benefit to me a lot in any academic writing situations.

What I've done already with this is storing copy of plenty of files I have collected through these years. But problems appear when I try to "create bibliography from item". It responds with answer : "The items you have selected contain no references. Please select one or more references and try again".

Another to ask is many papers I have stored copy can not be retrieved metadata for PDF. What's the problem with all these...

    Please help ..
    Thank you.
  • right, those two are related: If you don't have metadata for an item, you can create a bibliography from it.

If Zotero can't find the metadata for an item (which will be the case for some older articles, items you scanned yourself, as well as much grey literature and reports) you have to use the "Create Parent Item" option and enter information by hand.
