When using the Harvard Ref Style how do I make citations show as (A,B,C,...) instead of (A)(B)(C)

Hello my friends,

I need you help with changing the formatting of the citation style that I use in my document.

When I use MULTIPLE citations at the exact same place in my document they show as:
(A)(B)(C)

Example:
(Fullbright et al., 2002)(Thomas et al., 2012)(Manicks et al., 2003)

(There are different parentheses for each citation)

How can I make citations show as (A,B,C,...) instead of (A)(B)(C)
(I want my citations to be contained inside ONE pair of parentheses, separated by commas or ; )

This is what I want:
(Fullbright et al., 2002; Thomas et al., 2012; Manicks et al., 2003)

THANK you very much for your help my friends

WOW!!! Thank you for the fast reply Adam.
The problem is that my 100-page document is full of (A)(B)(C)... citations all over the place :-/

Is there some way I can convert all of my EXISTING citations from (A)(B)(C) to (A;B;C)

    Thank you ADAM!!!
  • not easily, no. Which word processor are you using?

    Not easily???
    Oh no...
    :-(

I am using Microsoft Word 2000
Is there any solution to make the conversion automatically from (A)(B)(C) to (A;B;C) my friend?

    Thank you for your help
    :-/
  • I don't see a way to make that happen automatically in Word, no, sorry.
  • I see...

Perhaps I can search and replace the
    )(
    with
    ;
in the FINAL version of my document.

    The )( is a string of 2 symbols that ALWAYS appears only between two citations right? So why not replace these characters with , or ;

Wouldn't this be enough as far as the appearance of my document is concerned in order to make the citations show as A;B;C;D etc.??

Could you please add this feature request to your to-do list???

    Please let me know...
    Thank you adam
  • sure, you can search&replace in your final doc - it just won't work well with keeping the document linked to Zotero, so probably best to do this in a copy, not the original.

As for the feature request - I just talked to Simon about this. We might do this at some point, but it's not high priority, as they use cases are rather limited once you are aware of how to enter multi-source citations in Zotero.

    Thank you Adam,

To be honest with you, from a programmer's point of view I think it is VERY VERY easy to add a function that does this exact type of AUTOconversion.

The script/process that you will create should just search the document for the )( string of characters and when it comes across these two symbols it would "merge the two/three/four... etc. citations into one".

Zotero is able to do much more complex things than what I am asking here! :-)

You could use the following words to name this feature:
    - Fix multi-source citation style format / appearance
    - Merge separate citations (A)(B)(C) into one (A;B;C)

Is there any hope of adding this feature in the near future Adam (considering that it is very easy to implement)?
    :-/

THANK YOU! You are the best.
  • anyone is welcome to write a VB (or other) script for Word that does that. That's what open source software is for. The fact that no one has done so in 7 years although it's relatively easy to do suggests that demand isn't all that high. (btw. - if you think it's "VERY VERY easy" - which is a bit of an overstatement, since the script does need to do more than just s&r parentheses - you should just do it yourself.)

For Zotero itself the main concern is the UX question - it's hard to find a place for rarely used functions, especially in the Word plugin.
  • Thank you for your reply Adam.

Unfortunately I don't have the necessary skills to create this script my friend... I hope it gets added in a future version though. The fact that you might do this in the future as you said give me hope!

Right now, I could pay $50 to a programmer who would do this for me. I don't know if I am allowed to post this here. Please bear with me.

    Thanks.
