Where and how are predefined terms defined?

This is a newbie question, but how and where are pre-defined terms actually defined, and can alternatives be defined? For instance, I want to use Ed. instead of Editor, and 'and others' instead of 'et al'.

Also want to use 'N.D.' for no date and understand the preference to define a term rather than use localized text.

  • When you are creating bibliographies those terms come from the given citation style you are using. All the styles are written in CSL and you can play around with changing these through CSLedit, paste chrome://zotero/content/tools/csledit.xul into your location bar and you can load up CSLs and manipulate them. If you look through the developer documentation you should see more information on editing CSLs.
  • The localized terms are specified in the locales.xml files bundled with Zotero. They're hosted by the XBib project.

The terms you mention ("Ed." and "and others") are available in the locale files already—it's just a question of using the right term in CSL.
