No icon for zotero in any sites

Hi,

I've read and tried all the info below for a hidden icon.. its not visible on any sites, and hasnt been at all since I moved to a macbook.

I've had the following reference 475209186 after submitting the report errors.

Any help gratefully received!
  • which info? It's really helpful if you actually tell us what you did for troubleshooting rather than claiming you have tried everything.
E.g. you don't provide most of the information we ask for under 12. here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues
So I have no way of knowing if you went through the other troubleshooting steps systematically.
  • Thanks for the quick reply..

To clarify I have followed all the steps in your link, (not 'claimed to!') and also followed some of the advice on earlier threads:Apologies - I was tired and fed so didn't type it all out! But here it is..( Numbers relating to your link. )
    1. - I have checked I was using various supported sites.
    2. - translator issues was not relevant
3.- I am using the latest version of Zotero (4.0 for mac) standalone with safari.
4.- I'm not using Firefox so not relevant.
    5. - I have clicked on 'update now' in the translators and reloaded the pages, as well as rebooted the computer.
    6. - there are no Zotero icons to hover over.
    7. - (Firefox).
    8. - system clock is correct.
    9. - (Firefox).
10.- the address bar icon was visible but not Zotero icon.
    11. - see 10.
    12. - I don't have the URL of a page not working as they are all working with no errors except with no icon. I followed the booklet marker thread from a thread below but that user was using windows, so I assume this would not help (I tried it anyway but no joy there either). I have also checked cookies etc. The report ID was 475209186. 'The report errors'message is now grey and not showing any errors but there's still no icon.

Thanks. This worked beatifully on my PC, so it's frustrating not working on my mac. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Marie.
  • the address bar icon was visible but not Zotero icon.
Sounds like you are expecting a Zotero icon (i.e. one that says "Zotero") in Safari. There is no such icon. That's why you have Zotero Standalone. If my assumption is incorrect, what do you mean by address bar icon and what do you mean by Zotero icon?
  • By icon I mean the little blue box that appears in the top right of the web address bar? So in google scholar for example there should be the web address of the paper or journal and at the right end there should be a blue box to click and link to my zotero library, or a yellow folder icon. I'm going on how it worked on pc.

If this doesn't happen in safari is there another way around it?

    Thanks.
  • I've looked at installing Firefox for mac - I didn't do this previously as it caused a problem on my old laptop. But maybe this is the answer?

What you describe above should work. I was just confused what you were referring to as "Zotero icon" and what you meant by "address bar icon".

Can you open preferences in Safari, go to plugins (maybe it's called add-ons or extensions) and see if Zotero is listed?
  • It's not listed there, or as safari extensions.

I've just tried again. Following the instructions to import book data using safari does suggest the blue icon or a folder should appear. I've tried in amazon now but no joy.

I'll continue tomorrow now. Possibly with installing the Firefox version?
  • If it's not listed under Safari Preferences -> Extensions, then you did not install the Safari connector. Get it from http://www.zotero.org/download/

There's no address bar icon in Safari, just a toolbar button that changes state. But what aurimas says—it sounds like you just didn't install the extension.
  • I mean ' the icon in the address bar' "not an single 'address bar icon'.... tiredness added the word icon where I didn't need it, but that was clarified already.

But thanks Aurimas - with that all confirmed - job done! It was a long way around and I think the main thing was I didnt have chrome installed. But now finally working and I have an up to date library once again!

    Thanks for the help. :-)

I think you're still getting things a bit mixed up here:

    1) The address bar is just the white text box that shows the web address, and the Safari extension, unlike Firefox and Chrome, does not put a colored (blue/yellow/etc.) icon in that, just a permanent, monochrome toolbar button to the left of the address bar that changes state based on what you're viewing.

    2) Having the Chrome browser installed has nothing to do with Safari. You don't need Chrome installed to use the Safari extension, though you can certainly use Chrome with Zotero Standalone instead.

I'm glad to hear it's working, though.
