APA PsycNet

Hello,

I experience intermittent errors when trying to use the site translator for APA PsycNet, which seems to be a frequent problem judging from some of the posts I've seen. I can't figure out why for some articles it works, and for others it doesn't. I'm posting this message because all the posts I've seen seem to say that the problem has been fixed, but I am still getting errors.

For example, for this DOI (10.1037/0033-295X.102.2.379) I receive the error message "An error occurred while saving this item. Check Known Translator Issues for more information." Hitting the Save to Zotero (DOI) button 10+ times continues to yield the same message.

When I look in chrome://extensions, I see the following errors:

[JavaScript Error: "No items returned from any translator"]

[JavaScript Error: "DOI Translator: could not find DOI"]

I am using Chrome 26.0.1410.64m with Zotero Connector 3.0.8.1, along with Zotero Standalone 4.0.8. I have clicked the update translators button.

Does anyone have any insight as to how to solve this problem? Thanks!
  • what is the URL exactly as you see it?
  • Hi, it's

    http://psycnet.apa.org/index.cfm?fa=search.displayrecord&uid=1995-24085-001
  • ok. i think I see the bug. we'll have this fixed shortly.

Basically, Zotero was not recognizing that page as APA PsychNet. It was using the generic DOI translator to retrieve metadata. Unfortunately some articles do not have an entry on CrossRef (the DOI database), so translation fails. You can see what translator is being used if you hover over the URL bar icon.
  • Ah great, thanks!

Yes it says "Save to Zotero (DOI)" when I hover over the icon. It seems to work for some articles but not others, perhaps due to the crossref problem you mention.
  • Should be fixed now. Update translators in Zotero Standalone (Preferences -> General -> Update Now), restart Chrome and try again. let us know if there are further problems.
  • Hm, unfortunately the problem persists. I still see "Save to Zotero (DOI)" when I hover and I get the same error message. I updated translators and restarted Zotero/Chrome a few times.
  • In Chrome, go to chrome://extensions then open Zotero Options. Go to Advanced and click Update Translators. Refresh APA PsychNET page and see if that fixes it.

If it doesn't fix it, on that same Advanced tab in Zotero options, there is a checkbox to Enable Logging. Check it, then refresh the APA PsychNET page. Once the page is done loading and you verify that the translator that is being used is DOI, go back to the Advanced tab of Zotero options and click Submit to Zotero Server. It will give you a Debug ID. Please post that ID here.

Aha, updating translators in chrome://extensions worked. Now when I hover it displays "Save to Zotero (APA PsycNet)" and the metadata are imported successfully into Zotero Standalone. Grabbing the pdf fails, but I have a feeling that's because I am now at home, rather than accessing the page through my University's servers. I will try again when I am on campus Monday and will post if there are any problems.

Thanks very much for your help! I appreciate it.
