Storage folder and the bibliographical data kept on two different places

I would like to keep the bibliographical data on the Internet using something like Dropbox but as the collections grows and gets kind of heavy in gigabytes I want to keep the storage folder on my desktop or on an external harddisk. Most material in the storage folder is available through links, but links can change or the library can stop a subscription, so I need the backup (storage folder). Thanks for any information about this issue.

Zotero 1.5 will allow for this kind of storage. Attachments and other files in the zotero/storage folder can be kept locally.
