zotero not working in FF or Chrome

I am using Zotero Standalone 4.06 with FF 20.0.1 and Chrome 26.0.1410.64m Win7-64. This was all working well this morning transferring images of web pages - right-click on "Save to Zotero .." and the text box comes up with the description of the web page and it appears in Zotero.
Suddenly this stopped working - no text box on FF and no transfer.
I switched to Chrome which worked for a few pages and then it stopped.
Any ideas of what might be awry?

  • were you able to get a report ID as requested by Dan?
    http://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_bugs#provide_a_report_id
  • I saw no report ID. It simply does not work. It has been working well for weeks. It was working well this morning.

Do you mean the report errors function is greyed out, or that you didn't get an explicit error message? If the latter, check if you can click on "Report Errors" as described in the link above and provide an error report ID.
  • There was no explicit error message received. The report errors function is greyed out. There was no "Report Errors" button in Chrome.
I don't know how to describe what doesn't happen, after I right-click on the web page to be transferred. I get the menu and select the option to save the web page. I expect a brief delay and then a text box appears with a description of the web page URL.
At the moment, the "error" is that this text box does not appear and the web page information is not transferred to Zotero Standalone.
As I mentioned earlier, it stopped working in FF,but I was able to continue in Chrome. It has stopped working in Chrome.
Everything is said to be up to date.
  • How about a Debug ID for the save attempt from Chrome? (Those instructions are Standalone, but you there's a place to generate a Debug ID in the Advanced section of the Chrome extension prefs as well.)
  • also, do make sure the problem persists after restarting your computer.
  • I got a lot of lines of output but no visible Debug ID - I checked the first 20 lines and the last 20 lines
  • If you follow the steps under the link provided by Dan above, you can submit the log report to Dan, automatically. The log will be identified by a Debug ID: it's not something you will find in the log itself.
  • somehow we're talking past each other.
You don't need to look at any output and try to find a debug ID:
In Chrome go to Tools->Extension click on "Options" for Zotero, then on advanced. Click the top box to enable debug logging.
Leave that tab open, go to any other page and try to save it to Zotero (which will presumably fail).
Return to the open advanced Zotero options tab and click on "Submit to Zotero Server"
You'll get a popup message with a Debug ID, which will start with "D"
  • Sorry for the confusion, but this is my first problem with ZOtero.
  • BTW, I'm using Zotero Standalone
  • You need to post the Debug ID here. As adamsmith says:
You'll get a popup message with a Debug ID, which will start with "D"
You need to tell us that ID. Submitting it isn't enough.
  • D12682259832
  • That's not a valid Debug ID.
  • (in case it got lost amidst all the other instructions - to me this sounds like the type of problem that more often than not vanishes after a computer restart. You did try that, yes?)
  • DOn't know what to tell you. That's what I got. I will try again.
  • You mistyped it. It was D1268259832. But that's from Zotero Standalone, not from Chrome, which is what we're asking for.
  • Chrome reports no errors since it first started.
  • See my instructions in this post:
    https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/29154/zotero-not-working-in-ff-or-chrome/#Item_10
that's the debug ID we need.
  • Strange - it works on ordinary web pages but not the specific one that I need.
When I went into Chrome extensions, there was an error message saying:
[Javascript error; "attempting to use a disconnected port object" (file "Miscellaneous bindings" line: 58)]

I am trying to get to www. canadiana.org - everything appears to be OK - I see the web pages but when I try to select them, nothing happens. Yet, at any other web site, no problem. "Canadiana" has been working just fine for months.
  • Ok, that's helpful. The Canadiana homepage, or a specific page on Canadiana? If the latter - which (at least one example - I assume this'd be a catalog result page or so)?
  • Sorry - was called away.
Chrome: if I go to any page other than the "canadiana.org" site, and right-click on the page, I get the option to select "Save Zotero Snapshot ....". Clicking on it, I get the familiar popup box and Zotero standalone has a copy of the page.
If I now go to the canadiana. org site, and select a page, then right-click on it, I do not get the option to "Save Zotero Snapshot..." There is a blank space in the menu of options.

FF: go to any page and right-click on it. I get the option "Create New Item from Current Page". If I click on it, nothing happens - no popup box and Zotero gets nothing.
If I go to Canadiana.org, I get the option "Create New Item..." Clicking on it does nothing.
  • could you copy the URL you're seeing when trying this from the URL bar and paste it here?
  • Also, could you please confirm that you have restarted your computer. I know it's obnoxious to ask that again, but I really don't want to spend a lot of time troubleshooting something that goes away after a restart.

I've shut down the computer and went away for half an hour. It is behaving exactly as it did when I shut it down.
  • you should see a Zotero URL bar icon on that page (i.e. a book symbol in the URL bar). Do you? What happens when you click on that?
  • I do not see a Zotero URL bar icon of any description
  • When I use Chrome, I do see the "book" icon.
  • @Dan - do you have any idea? Something sounds like it's completely fried, but I'd expect to see at least some error if that's the case. Suggestions?
