Style Error: Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology

Hi,

I'm having trouble with citations in the text from the same year that have multiple authors in common. According to examples in the journal the citations in the text should be given as (First_author et al. Year_a) and (First_author et al. Year_b). However, when I do this I get (First_author, Second_author, Third_author et al. Year) and (First_author, Second_author, Different_third_author et al. Year).

For example in http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00265-013-1520-y/fulltext.html

Kitchen DM, Cheney DL, Seyfarth RM (2003a) Female baboons’ responses to male loud calls. Ethology 109:401–412

Kitchen DM, Seyfarth RM, Fischer J, Cheney DL (2003b) Loud calls as an indicator of dominance in male baboons, Papio cynocephalus ursinus. Behav Ecol Sociobiol 53:374–384

These articles appear in the text cited as (Kitchen et al. 2003a, b).

Thanks for your help with this--let me know if you need any additional information.
