Sync error 0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) [nsIFile.isFile]

Hello,

After good service without any problems over the last months, I suddenly get above error code (Error code 1269692879), with the Debug ID D857758334
It starts syncing but then stops with no obvious reason. Restart etc. did not help.

  • Try the 4.0 Branch dev XPI, which might give you a more helpful error here.
  • Actually, you're still using 3.0.14. First try upgrading to 4.0.4 from zotero.org. You should also upgrade to the latest version of Firefox, from the outdated version 16.0.2 that you have.

    You should also check that you have auto-updating of Firefox and add-ons enabled so that you always have the latest versions.
  • Anyhow, this is caused by a long filename, which combined with your data directory location is creating a file path that's too long for Windows. Zotero is supposed to shorten those automatically, but that might not be happening properly. Let us know what happens with 4.0.4 or the latest 4.0 branch dev XPI.
  • Taking another look at this, you also appear to have your Zotero data directory stored within Dropbox, which you absolutely don't want to do, since you'll corrupt your database and encounter cross-platform problems like this. There are ways to link just the 'storage' directory within the data directory into Dropbox if you want to avoid using Zotero file syncing, but the rest of the data directory—and most importantly, the database—should be kept elsewhere.
  • Thanks for the good advise! Upgraded everything, seems to run smoothly now, only the non-stop turning sync arrow already described by other users, but function ok.
    Will also shift Zotero data directory back from Dropbox, copied it "by mistake" with other files..
