Issues Inserting Citation after updating to Zotero 4.0.4 Report ID: 1607143715

Hello!

I updated my Zotero Standalone to 4.0.4 and it stopped integrating with Openoffice. I updated Openoffice and Java, and then reinstalled the plugin which didn't work. I tried uninstalling Zotero and reinstalling from scratch and it's still not working. I can see the Zotero tool bar in Openoffice in all of the above cases but none of the buttons work (don't respond). Zotero by itself it seems to be fine. I'd appreciate any advice anyone could give. Thank you!
  • this is most likely a Java related issue. Run through the relevant steps for your OS here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting#openofficeorg_neooffice_and_libreoffice

Generally we recommend LibreOffice, which is more heavily maintained and developed, over OpenOffice, but if you're running a recent version the latter should work as well.
  • Hi Adam,

This seems to be the problem that I'm having. But since I'm using standalone and don't use Zonealarm I'm really sure how to fix the problem.

    Windows
"Communication error or non-responsive plugin buttons"

Word could not communicate with Zotero. Please ensure Firefox or Zotero Standalone is running and try again.” Or plugin appears and buttons are clickable, but no insert citation window appears.

If you are using Zotero for Firefox, ensure that Zotero and Zotero Word for Windows Integration are enabled in Tools→Add-ons→Extensions
If you use ZoneAlarm, disable ForceField, which is known to cause a communication error.
Windows plugins communicate with Firefox using the remote window. Thus, launching Firefox with the -no-remote command-line option will prevent the plugins from functioning. (You might do this if you have multiple Firefox profiles.) The solution is to remove the -no-remote command-line option from the shortcut used to launch the Firefox profile on which Zotero is installed. As long as all other profiles use the -no-remote option, you should be able to open them and the Zotero profile simultaneously."
  • I'd suspect this is one of the java issues (the ones mentioning implementation loader). The exact message may differ, but in OOo non-responsive toolbar buttons are most likely due to something not working right with Java.
  • I tried installing libreoffice but the problem persists. I've cleared old versions of java. Uninstalled OpenOffice and Libreoffice, then reinstalled libreoffice again and tried reinstalling the plugin but its still not working. I ran out of ideas for what to do.
  • Windows.

I ran through the instructions for libreoffice troubleshooting as well.
  • Is there any information or log files that might allude to the cause of the problem?
  • Maybe Simon has an idea - if you've run for the java on Windows instructions I'm out of ideas.
  • Did you follow these instructions already? Did the installation complete successfully?
  • Yes I did. Now the toolbar in Libreoffice has no icons and the tool bar is called "Add On 2" Zotero, Java, Libreoffice and the integration are up to date. I've reinstalled it over 5 times to try to get it to work. I've even uninstalled libreoffice and reinstalled to try to get the extension to work. Please find of a screen show of what I'm seeing here: http://i.imgur.com/xd3ToCq.png. Needless to say it isn't responding to clicks.
  • Has anyone seen this sort of button disappearing before?
  • There's a thread on disappearing icons, but the people in that thread report that the buttons work even though the icons have disappeared. However, you might try resetting your LibreOffice user profile and then reinstalling the plugin.
  • Ah that did fix the icons. They still don't work though unfortunately. I cannot get the insert or edit citation (nor the edit bib) buttons to do anything when I click on them. But I can get the insert bib, refresh document and remove field code buttons to give me this message http://imgur.com/QynQvLj. Does that give anyone ideas?
