Abbreviation list without word proc. plugin?

Is there a way to use the built-in abbreviation list without the word processor plugin, i.e. for bibliographies created using quick copy or "Create Bibliography from Selected Items"?

If not, that'd be great to allow - not sure exactly where to put that option, though.
