Synce Timing Out -- Too Many

Hello all,

I was one of the users who had problems last month importing citations from WorldCat (OCLC). In a nutshell, citations taken from WorldCat had hundreds of "junk" (empty, or only containing a single letter) child notes. Thanks for solving that issue so quickly!

I've now run into a related problem. After deleting all of those pesky child notes (as well as many of the problematic citations) from my library, I had an over-stuffed trash folder. I emptied the folder in my local library (in the Firefox browser). It took nearly an hour, but Zotero successfully deleted the nearly fifteen thousand "junk" notes and citations.

Now here's the rub: when I try to sync my local library to my remote library on Zotero.org, the server (correctly) notices that I have about fifteen thousand conflicts to resolve -- all those files in my trash folder. Since the "Conflict Resolution" screen does not any sort of automated option (i.e. choose the local file for very conflict), I tried to manually select the local file for each conflict. By my estimates, it would take three hours of clicking. Unfortunately, the pop-up "Conflict Resolution" screen seems to time out after about thirty minutes.

Since I've gone thirty-seven days without properly syncing my local and remote libraries, I thought I would write in and see if anyone on your side knew how I could resolve this problem.
  • Is there anything on the remote server that you don't have locally and that you need?
If not, you can use the "Restore to Zotero Server" option in the Sync tab of the Zotero preferences under "Reset" (make sure to pick the right option, I believe the default is Restore _from_ Server, i.e. the opposite of what you want.)
  • What are the conflicts? Simply deleting items on one computer isn't enough to trigger conflicts—you'd have to have made changes on another before syncing changes from the other.
  • Hello @adamsmith and @Dan Stillman,

Thank you for your help! I finally got a block of time where I could test out the "Reset to Zotero Server" function, and it worked perfectly! (That is, after I turned off automatic syncing). As always, I appreciate your advice, and I hope this thread will help other users in the future.
