Maxed out 300MB

I have Zotero standalone and Zotero plugin for Google chrome.

I have just got to the limit of the free version 300GB. I don't want to have to get a new reference software. Syncing isn't important to me and I want to know whether I can exceed 300GB if I don't sync. And if so, how?

Thanks!!!
  • you don't need to sync your files at all for Zotero to work - you can just disable file syncing in the "sync" tab of the Zotero preferences. Even with file syncing enabled, while you'll get a sync error message, going above 300MB won't prevent you from using Zotero.
Finally, of course, if you'd like to use file syncing, you can upgrade your storage

  • Hi,

I have also reached the limit of my free version 300MB. I did exactly the same, I disabled the syncing and continued to add more files on my Zotero. Now I have a lot more documents on my personal library then on my online library (since I have not been syncing for a while). I am currently considering upgrading my storage space. The main reason is to be able to create a group library to share with others. I read from the instructions that "private groups can use Zotero File Storage for file syncing as long as the group owner has storage space available and has opted to use Zotero File Storage for group files".
Question 1: So if I upgrade and pay for storage space, how and where do I specify that I want to use it for group files??
Question 2: This storage space will also be used for my personal library I am guessing?
Question 3: As previously mentioned, I have been adding a lot of files to my personal library without ever syncing (because I reached my limit of 300MB), therefore once I have paid and upgraded my storage space, am I likely to experience any problem when syncing (because of the large amount of new documents)??

    Thank you

  • 1. In the sync tab of the Zotero (client) preferences, you can select whether to use Zotero storage for My Library, your groups, both, or neither:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/preferences/sync
    2. See 1.) - you can keep file syncing turned off for your personal library if you want to and still sync with groups or you can turn it on. If you do turn it on, files will upload in the order in which you added them, I believe, so storage would fill up from your personal library first.

    3. The first thing might take a bit, but no, you're not likely to experience any problems.
  • Hi,

I followed your suggestion. I kept the file syncing tuned off for my personal library (by not ticking the option) but I did turn on the sync attachements files for my group library using Zotero storage.
However, for some reason my entire personal library was still synced and so updated online... I am confused as to why this happened. I am trying to save all my storage space for my group library and therefore I do not want to sync my personal library.
I would really appreciate your advice on this issue.
  • You can't turn of syncing for your library when you want to sync groups, but data syncing doesn't affect your storage at all.

Only files synced to Zotero count towards your storage and if you unchecked file syncing for My Library those aren't synced anymore.
  • Thank you for the clarification
