Citation language

Hi,

I'm new to zotero, and have a beginners problems I haven't been able to solve:

Language in references: I'm writing in Danish, my Windows language is Danish (Win XP), my wordprocessor (Libre Office 4.0) is in Danish, and Zotero (standalone) is in Danish. Still, citations are generated in English (e.g. (Kaplan, Robert S. and Norton, David P., 2008)). I'm almost there, when I use insert citation the language here is Danish, but as soon as i press Enter it is interted in text as English. Same for the bibliography, this is English as well. In about:config the matchOS is set to true, and bibliographyLocale is set to da-DK. What am I missing?

Thanks!

Jesper
  • You've seen this? http://www.zotero.org/support/supported_languages#citations_and_bibliographies
    Also, which style?
  • Yes, I've seen this, that's where I got the hint about setting bibliographyLocale.

I'm currently using IEEE style - does that matter?
  • IEEE isn't fully localized. What terms exactly are you seeing in English? Skimming, I see that "presented at" "Available" and "Accessed" are all hard-coded into the style.
  • The 'and' in (Kaplan, Robert S. and Norton, David P., 2008)) - should be 'og' in Danish.

    And in bibliography:
Kaplan, Robert S., Norton, David P., 2008. The Balance Scorecard. Sådan bygges bro mellem vision, værdier og strategier, 3rd ed. Børsen, København.

'3rd ed' should be '3. udg.'.
  • this isn't IEEE style at all. Could you double-check which style you're using? IEEE has numbers in square brackets in the text

  • Hmm, ok, I may be doing it wrong. I started with Elsevier's Harvard style in the Export settings for Standard Format, later changed it to IEEE, but actually I don't even know if that's the right place to set this, or if changes here has any effect in the Libre Office document. Maybe this is still Harvard style. Sorry, I am a beginner at this...
  • Yes, Elsevier's Harvard is always US English, since all of their journals are.
    See here: http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_usage#plugin_toolbar
    and here: http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_usage#document_preferences
on how to change a citation style in a document.
Of the styles that ship with Zotero, American Anthro..., Nature, Cell, and Elsevier's Harvard are English only. All others are localized, though some more thoroughly than others (e.g. Vancouver, APA, and Chicago Manual are fully localized, IEEE has some hard-coded English)
  • Ok, thanks a lot for your help! I'll take a look at what is available and see if any of these fit my needs.

Just a final question: If I need to set up my own citation style, do you have a pointer to a how-to on doing this? Is there a place for sharing your customized citation styles? Maybe I can find one there which is close to what I need and can modify this.

Thanks again for your help. I'm really impressed with what Zotero can do, I just need to figure out the details.

We don't host any custom styles, but do accept styles for any publication or as used by universities or professional organizations. Typically we ask that the style requirements are documented online somewhere before accepting a style, though depending on the style that rule is not set in stone.
