I think the better solution is to take the route of BibTeX and create a separate category for conference papers (well BibTeX does inProceedings). There are a myriad of reasons for this, but one of the key ones is that in certain fields, computer science for example, a conference paper may be considered an archival quality document. I've been hacking away at this feature and hope to have something sometime in the near future.
actually, the near future was a whole lot nearer than I thought. It's pretty simple to add a new object to Zotero. I've written all the code, modified the SQL and all that, so now I can create "Conference Paper" objects. It even works properly with the BibTeX exporter -- which is my main concern. Along the way I also fixed a few bugs with the conference exporter.
As soon as I see some documentation on how to submit patches, I'll submit it. But I don't see where we're supposed them too right now. In the mean time, if someone is really interested, email me and I'll see about putting the patch together for you (if the forum won't give you my email address, a little googling for "pridkett" will figure out who I am so you can contact me).
