ScienceDirect and .pdf

Hi,

The zotero plug-in (tried both Firefox and Chrome) won't download associated .pdf's with the citation from ScienceDirect when I try. I'm not having problems with other sites.

Example link:

http://www.sciencedirect.com.ezproxy.massey.ac.nz/science/book/9780702034299

Can you help me figure out what might be wrong? I've updated to latest Zotero standalone version as well as translators.

I've read through a discussion on this issue in the forum that took place in January and it seemed like everything had been fixed, but must admit a lot of the discussion was over my head.

Is it possible to download the .pdf's with citations in ScienceDirect right now? If yes, I would love to be able to.

Thanks.
  • Do you have access to the actual PDFs you are trying to download? I.e. can you download them manually in your browser?

From the link you posted (minus the proxy) Zotero automatically attaches PDFs for Front Matter, Copyright, Contributors, Acknowledgements, Preface. I do not have access to the rest, so they are not attached for me. Check if importing Front Matter works properly.
  • I am able to download them individually as well as with the firefox plugin downthemall. With zotero, I'm not getting any of them -- just the citations and page snapshot.

    any ideas?
  • Could you create a Debug ID for an attempt to save a reference with PDF?
  • Debug ID D1487605222.

Let me know what you find. Thanks so much for your help with this.

  • What does it mean? And what do I need to do differently so that the pdf's download with the citation when I use ScienceDirect?

That debug ID was generated with Chrome, correct? Can you confirm that what you said above is also true for Firefox plugin?

Due to technical limitations, the PDF download will not currently work in Chrome, but it should be working in Firefox.

Edit: that is, the PDF downloads from Science Direct will not currently work in Chrome. Most other websites should work fine.
  • Also, if the above Debug ID was generated in Chrome and Firefox does indeed fail to attach PDFs from the link above, could you generate another Debug ID with Firefox?
  • Hi - yes, the first debug ID was generated with Chrome. Same problem in Firefox as well.

Here is a debug report for the same citations and pdf files using Firefox.

    Debug ID: D1402561457.

    (sorry about the slow reply)

Except, that's still via Standalone. I imagine aurimas meant in Firefox in full client mode—that is, with Standalone closed—not in connector mode.
  • Ok. Just tried in Firefox without having standalone open and it works. PDFs downloaded doing it that way. Any chance there will be a fix to get ScienceDirect pdf's working with standalone anytime soon though?

    Thanks for your help.
  • I'm having the same problem with ScienceDirect pdfs not auto-downloading. Any chance this is going to be fixed?
    My debug ID D508373721
  • What's your set-up and what's a URL? As Aurimas says, if you you're using a connector and going through a proxy this currently won't work.

Chrome + Standalone on Windows 7
    No proxy.
Further details: Its only for sciencedirect and only on this computer. I've tried the same link on other computers (same office, same internet connection) and it works fine. I re-installed with all user settings deleted and new data directory and it still didn't work.
  • @Dan - what's in the debug?

I can't reproduce this with the URL that was given by @cwren, but it also does not seem to correspond to the debug log. @cwren, can you submit a Debug ID from Standalone for the URL you posted above (i.e. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0305440314000028)?

the URL for the debug is http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0305440313004342 and that fails, too (as the debug shows). That should be enough, no? Though I don't understand why it fails & can't reproduce it either.

I'd maybe start with Chrome extensions? Are there any others installed?
  • Right, based on the debug log that should be the case. And if it is, then @cwren should check to see what s/he sees when following this link: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0305440313004342/pdfft?md5=e4a99603920eac0b7a2b9739882c1681&pid=1-s2.0-S0305440313004342-main.pdf That link may have expired, so just try clicking on Download PDF link on the sciencedirect page. You should just see the PDF.

All of this assuming that you actually _do_ have access to the PDF.

Based on the debug log, this is not a typical cookie issue that we have seen. The PDF for that article is actually stored on ac.els-cdn.com, which has caused issues with proxies, but I don't see Zotero even trying to connect to that server. My guess is that you simply do not have access to the PDF.
