Trouble registering a new user

I'm posting on behalf of a student I'm assisting -- she's trying to register for Zotero, but when she submitted the form (and then when I tried to do the same on my computer), we received the following error messages:
[username]@[domain.com] is unavailable
&
"Invalid Credentials"

Any tips to help her set up an account?

    After registering you can use either your username or email address to log in, but email addresses cannot be used as a username.

    If that is not what she's trying to do, is it possible she already created an account with that address?
