zotero in word not syncing

Everytime i try to add a citation into my word document or even amend one I get a message
Item (1 for example) in the highlighted citation no longer exists in your zotero database do you want to select a substitute.

The fact is the item is in my database, which is doubly confusing, it then says

clicking no will delete the field codes for citations (don't know what this means but sounds bad) preserving the citation text but deleting it from you bibliography.

All the citations it states, which is everyone in my first chapter for my PhD, 11000 words, do exist in my database, and to have to go through all again is a pain. Plus it does not highlight the citations that it request I change, so I am afraid I will put the wrong citation in. Any help out there???

(note that you can't necessarily tell whether the item is in your database - Zotero checks a unique internal identifier, not the content of the citation - that's why it breaks when you use export/import or when you delete (instead of merge) duplicates).
