which Word version, which OS? Also, when does that message pop up exactly?
  • OS is windows 7 and Microsoft word 2003
Message comes up as title " Zotero integration error"

    [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [zoteroIntegrationApplication.getDocument]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/integration.js :: _callIntegration :: line 273" data: no]
  • Does this happen in a new document? Do you have any security software installed that could potentially interfere with Zotero?
  • It is working now. I wonder why it happened, but glad it was temporary. Thanks for your support.
  • Hi. Now I,m facing a different error. Zotero is working OK in all other documents, except when I try to cite a reference in a document which was sent to me by my colleague, the document already contain citations and bibliography that he made from his computer. But now I want to add and edit some citations, when I do that I get this error:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
The highlighted citation no longer exist in your zotero database. Do you want to select a substitute item?
Clicking No will delete the field codes for citations containing this item, preserving the citation text but deleting it from your bibliography.

please suggest what could be wrong . Thanks
  • tell your colleague to make sure they have "Store References in Document" checked under "Set Document Preferences" in the Word/LO plugin before sending you the document - that should allow get rid of that error.
  • Hi Adam
My colleague has resent me the document, this time he followed the instructions you mentioned. But, It is still showing the same error as mentioned above. What else could be done?
  • Try clicking alt+F9 in Word - that will show the field codes for Zotero citations. Paste the code of one of the citations ZOtero doesn't recognize (the highlighted citation when you get the above error message) here.
  • Clicking alt+F9 in word doesn't prompt any action. It's strange.
  • try this then:
    http://www.ehow.com/how_2257458_display-field-codes-microsoft-word.html

also, under "Set Document Preferences" there is a choice between "Fields" and "Bookmarks" - what do you have selected there?
  • It's not working i tried to follow the instructions in the link but didnt work. Also when i try to click set document preference in the document it gives me same error. Whereas, in other documents clicking set doc preferences open up the choice where you can select fields and bookmarks.
  • So what's happening is that you don't have access to your colleagues library, so Zotero doesn't recognize the citation he inserted.
Storing them in the document should fix that, but for some reason it doesn't here - something is likely not working right on your colleague's computer, but what exactly is hard to say without more input from him. It would be helpful to see if he sees the fieldcodes, e.g. and what format he sees when opening the set document preferences dialog.
  • That's true. I will ask him and get back to you. Thanks
  • I am getting a similar error, saying that the highlighted citation no longer exists in my bibliography -- except that it does, and it's not something I copied from a colleague but rather entries I directly downloaded to my Zotero bibliography from library and journal databases, etc. This is maddening because it ends up deleting the citation and page numbers for every affected source. Every new footnote I try to create now, I get this message. This just started today and has never happened to me before. I'm working on a Mac in Word 14.2.5.
