Problems with export and import

Hi, I am running Zotero 3.0.11 with Firefox 17.0.1 on a Windows 7 machine (connected to the internet), and also Zotero standalone 3.0.11.1 on a Windows 7 machine (which is not connected to an external network).

I regularly in the past have exported items using Zotero RDF format (with files) from the first machine to the second via USB. This has been faultless until a recent upgrade (of Zotero, Standalone and Firefox).

The actual items travel across fine (books, journal articles, web pages, etc), but any attached snapshots or pdfs appear on the standalone machine after import as linked pages (which cannot be opened). Also, isolated pdfs do not import at all on the standalone machine.

Any thoughts?
  • it'd be helpful to try exporting something and importing it on the same machine. Does that work?
  • The problem seems to be with the Standalone. Export/import works fine on the internet machine running Firefox. When I export a previously good item with pdf attachment on the standalone, the import replaces the pdfs with linked pages.
  • you are moving the entire folder, yes? Zotero puts imports with files into a folder - you need the whole thing for export/import to work.

If yes, see if you can provide an error report

    after importing on standalone:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_bugs#provide_a_report_id
since you can't send an ID, copy& paste the entire content of the report (if any) here.

Yes, I am moving the entire export folder with the rdf file and the folders with the files. I can actually see the pdf file in this export folder and drag it onto the incorrectly imported item in Zotero standalone, where the pdf then correctly appears. (This is a workaround, but not efficient where there are many items and files in the import).

There is an error report in Standalone, but all the items seem to relate to the Word integration extension. (I restarted word then immediately tried the import, and this is the error report after that.)

Nevertheless, here is the error report:

  • Yeah, nothing there. Can you generate a Debug ID for the import, save it to a text file, zip the text file, and e-mail it support@zotero.org with a link to this thread?
  • Debug ID sent as requested.
Thanks for the super quick responses!
    Steve
  • OK, no path is being saved to the database for the attachment in that file. Can you email the RDF file itself to support@zotero.org? (It looks like this is just a sample file with one or two items, which is perfect—if that's not the case, you should generate a file from a single item that triggers this.)

No need to send the PDFs—just the .rdf file will do.

I've sent your RDF file to Simon, who knows the RDF code. If there's nothing sensitive in the file, you can also post the contents to https://gist.github.com/ and provide a link and someone else here might take a look sooner.
  • I have 60,000 bibliographic entries (no pdf attached). I've split into smaller files for import into Zotero 3. After importing two of these files the script stopped.
I wondered if there is limits on the number of bibliographic entries that can be saved? I have my library stored on my PC.
  • As I apply the script "import" the use of Zotero memory consumption exceeds the giga. Why this script consumes so much memory?
  • because Zotero reads the entire content into memory - I'd guess that's the reason for this failing, too.
  • also - why are you using import in the first place?

  • Hello Addams. My problem is that I have my bibliography in EndNote. The 60 000 bibliographic entries are spread over 4 files between 2-10 mb. I export each file in ris format. Then I tried to import the ris files to Zotero . However I can not export more than two. Already the third file will not let me import it.
If these files consume a giga of memory in Zotero and freezes my machine. How I can download the other two files without saturating the memory?
  • I've never tested RIS imports with libraries this large. I'll investigate this, but first I need to generate 60,000 bibliographic entries :-) Zotero freezing up during large imports like that is not entirely surprising (if you wait it out, it should unfreeze), but I don't think it should be using this much memory.

Am I understanding this right, that you import two RIS files and the amount of memory being consumed by Zotero goes up to about 1GB? Does the amount of memory being used decrease if you restart Zotero/Firefox? Can you import another file after restarting?

    @cachi,

First and foremost, we should move this discussion to another thread. This is unrelated to the original poster's question (sorry I didn't realize this earlier). Please start a new thread in the import/export category and copy your last post above (that has most of the relevant info).

Furthermore, provide your operating system and version, Zotero version (Firefox plugin, if so which Firefox version, or Standalone and which version exactly) and make sure your translators are up to date (Preferences... -> General -> Update Now). See if you can reproduce the problem after updating the translators.

I am currently importing 15,000 items (~30MB file). After 15 minutes it's about 1/4 way through, but I see almost no increase in memory (maybe 20MB so far, but it's a bit jumpy, so it's hard to tell) and Firefox is not frozen. I'll do further testing with importing multiple files, but so far it doesn't look like I am able to reproduce your problem.
