Create a secure WebDAV server

I need to store and share sensitive information with a group. I am thinking that I need my owner server. I was thinking of building a Linux/Unix based server? if so which one? I am looking for any options.

Can I just install Zotero on a W7 computer, upload the files to Zotero on that computer, then sync other computers to that computer? This sounds ideal but I admit that I am not an IT pro...

If you want secure WebDAV, I would go for Apache on Linux and use mod_dav and mod_ssl modules.

However, if you want to use group libraries and store data inside your organization, you need to install Zotero server. This can be a difficult task if you are not an IT professional, but the instructions are here if you want to follow that route:
