OpenOffice insert causes "unresponsive script" warning

I'm running OpenOffice.org on Ubuntu Gutsy. I have a large Zotero bibliography (3400 references) and am using APA style. When I insert a citation into my Writer documents, the process starts out slow (5-10 seconds) and seems to get slower with each insert. After perhaps half a dozen inserts I start getting an Unresponsive Script warning after I select the citation and press the OK button. Clicking "Continue" causes the script to finish and the citation to be entered. Any solution to 1) the overall slowness and 2) the Warning. I've run my database through the repair tool and also checked it with PRAGMA integrity check - it is ok. I'm using the latest version of all software.
