Add type "exhibition" and "catalogue"

hi - it would be useful to include both Exhibition and Catalogue as types of entries for those of us involved in the visual arts and design.
Catalogues essays are becoming important research outputs and often there are several authors in one catalogue. The reference to the exhibition and dates needs to be included - so journal or magazine entries do not work.
Exhibitions are also publications - albeit a different form from text-based. Information required here includes Curator, Title, Artists, Dates, Location(s).

  • Exhibitions aren't "publications" really; they're events. More like, say, a public speech, rather than a book.

As for catalogs; what's wrong with a generic "Document"?

Well, there should be a way to cite exhibits in the upcoming hierarchical item types structure--Zotero currently supports presentations which are also events. In the meantime, presentation is probably the best item type to enter those.

Document doesn't have a field for place of publication (yet).

Catalogs are cited as books, with exhibit info appended:

Barter, Judith A., ed. Mary Cassatt: Modern Woman. Chicago: Art Institute of Chicago, in association with Harry N. Abrams, 1998. Published in conjunction with the exhibition “Mary Cassatt: Modern Woman” shown at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the National Gallery in Washington, DC, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Exhibit info can go into the Abstract or Extra for now; in the hierarchical types presumably it will be possible to create a relationship between the catalog item and the exhibit item.
  • Just another user who regularly works with Museum Catalogues that wishes there were better options. Exhibit Title, Curator Name, etc seem easy enough to add, but none of the available categories you have are adequate.
  • Yes I agree... it would be good to have these item types.
  • @antonyupward Can you give some examples of how exhibitions and catalogues are cited? This would help us determine how best to incorporate them into CSL/Zotero.
  • I am a museum anthropologist and frequently want to cite text in wall panels and labels

@lydiawood It would be very helpful if you could provide examples of label and wall-panel citations in journals. Can you also provide links to examples of Instructions for Authors from journals that include or might include these kinds of reference citations? With this input, someone here will be able to provide you with what you request.
  • event is part of CSL 1.0.2. catalogue as far as we have been able to discern can be captured as a book with a curator creator.
