Different Zotero versions offered by Firefox add-ons manager

Hi,

Someone in my team just added Zotero via the Firefox Add-Ons manager, and we've noticed that the latest version they are offered is Zotero 3.0.8, whereas mine is automatically updated and was most recently updated to 3.0.10

???

We've tried everything we can think of to get Firefox to check for updates, but nothing shows up beyond 3.0.8. Our thoughts:

1. The person who sees 3.0.8 as the latest version is running Windows 7 on 64 bit operating system, whereas I am running on 32 bits. Is there a different version offered depending on whether you are running on 32 bit/64 bit Windows 7?

2. Is there some issue in FireFox's records that doesn't recognise the update from 3.0.8 to 3.0.9, even though it does find the 3.0.9 to 3.0.10 update?

3. Do you need to have a Zotero account configured (for syncing etc) to see the latest versions?

It is important for us to understand how users may end up with something other than the latest version of Zotero. We are working on tools that help our NVivo users integrate their Zotero libraries into NVivo projects. We are working with the following assumptions:
A. All Zotero for Firefox users start with the most recent version available at the time they add Zotero; and
B. Any update will apply automatically for most users (assuming the default Firefox configuration is to Update Add-ons automatically)
C. If users have disabled the automatic update of add-ons, users can still get the latest version of Zotero by checking for updates in the Firefox Add-On Manager

thanks
Kate
  • It depends on where you install Zotero from originally.
It's recommended to always install Zotero from zotero.org, which will guarantee you always have the most recent version - everyone who originally installed from zotero.org should now get 3.0.10 - either automatically, or where that's disabled via manual check for updates.

If you install Zotero from mozilla's add-on repository, it will take a bit longer until you get new versions, as they have to run through mozilla's review process.
  • (And right now we can't even submit the latest version to addons.mozilla.org because of a problem with their online validator, so there may be a longer delay than normal—all the more reason to always get Zotero from zotero.org.)
