Report with abstracts

Apologies for possible duplication, but I'm looking for a way to create a report that includes abstracts - preferably in APA, but that is not essential. I've found a couple of related discussions but not exactly what I am looking for. Thanks!
  • do you mean report or bibliography?
For report, just right-click on the items and select "generate report".
If you mean bibliography, follow up in one of the existing threads on this - the instructions should be relatively easy to follow, but we're happy to take questions.
  • I meant report, but when I generate one the abstract is not included. Everything else is perfect. Is there a way to include the abstract too? Apologies if I'm missing something obvious!
  • I should have made clear: there is a link to the abstract, but I'd like the actual abstract to appear.
  • the abstract only appears in reports if it's in Zotero - if it's not imported it's not included in reports. Not all data sources import abstracts - where are you getting your imports from?
  • Mostly Google Scholar - sometimes directly, sometimes the pdfs have been saved on my desktop first and then dragged into Zotero.
  • yeah - that's one of the reasons we discourage using google scholar (and retrieve metadata, which is based on google scholar) all that much - you sometimes get incomplete data and you'll never get abstracts or full first names for authors. If you're using APA style, the fact that GS doesn't import DOIs is another problem.

Go to a "real" source - like an article database or the publisher, almost all of those import abstracts, full first names, and DOIs and are generally more reliable.
  • Thanks - I will try that.
  • This seems to work from PsychINFO, although it didn't work first time for some reason - but I'll figure it out. However, I've had less luck with publishers' sites.

I search on Google Scholar, but then follow the link provided by my university to the publisher's site - so I am no longer in GS itself, but on the site of the publisher with full access to the document, via the university. Only then do I add to Zotero - when I am on the publisher's page that displays the abstract and other info, and gives me a link to the full-text pdf. However, Zotero then grabs the info but not the pdf - and still doesn't grab the abstract. If I try waiting till I have followed the link to the pdf itself, the icon allowing me to grab disappears.

Is there another way I should be going about this?
  • ...in other words, will I only be able to grab abstracts if I go direct to the publisher's page rather than via Scholar? - or is my library's access arrangements interfering with the grabbing process, meaning that I'll have problems even if I go directly there and then enter my institutional info?
  • please provide sample URLs where the abstract or PDF is not being imported.
  • and no, you're not doing something wrong, this should work, but it depends on the publisher - how you get to the site doesn't matter, though.
  • Hmm, I've just played around a bit and I think the problem is actually with one specific publisher's site. Zotero wouldn't grab this article, but it would from a different publisher:

    http://journals1.scholarsportal.info.myaccess.library.utoronto.ca/details-sfx.xqy?uri=/01623257/v39i0004/678_brtlanoair.xml
  • scholarsportal isn't currently supported - but if you follow the link to the publisher:
    http://www.springerlink.com/content/5803h01478m6t560/
you'll get full text and abstract
  • Yes, I eventually did get it from Springer. Is there a list of supported publishers somewhere?
  • you can see a list of all translators here, tested every day (click on any one of the links)
    http://zotero-translator-tests.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/
but that's not a list of all publishers, unfortunately. Many publishers use a publishing system supported by Zotero - e.g. Highwire of Silverchair - so we wouldn't even know of all supported sites.

If you are on a page and hover with your mouse cursor over the URL bar icon, Zotero will tell you the name of the translator in parentheses - generic ones like COinS (as for scholarsportal) or DOI (for some other sites) are typically of lower quality and never include abstracts.
  • Got it. Thanks for all your help.
