Installing word plugin (word 2007) problem and solution

I do not know if this has been discussed (a short search said no), but I just wanted to alert the developers that Zotero's Word plugin cannot be completed unless word (2007 is the one I tried) is run at least once. I just formatted, and in the process of installing everything found that I could not install the word plugin. I was distressed, and while working through the manual install, I found that my startup directory did not exist.

After running word for the first time then closing it, Zotero's Word plugin installed without a hitch.

Well, I just thought I could contribute back to this amazing project in some little way. Keep up the fantastic work!

    Thanks for your report.

There is a second issue closely related to this one, which is that foreign, non-English installations of MS Word do not create a startup folder called "STARTUP", but instead one called 'startup' in that particular language. Currently the installer just gives up if it can't the "STARTUP" folder where it can be expected. To solve both these problems one would need to be able to determine if there is a 'startup' folder even if it isn't called "STARTUP" (one way would be to have a list with the 'startup' folder names used by all the different languages, but I haven't found that in MS's documentation). So perhaps the error message can be extended from:

"The installer could not find the correct folder in which to install the Zotero"
"Plugin for Word. This generally occurs if you run a non-English version of"
"Microsoft Word. Instructions to manually install the Word plugin can be"
    "found at http://www.zotero.org/documentation/microsoft_word_integration"

    to e.g.

"The installer could not find the correct folder in which to install the Zotero"
"Plugin for Word. This can occur if you have a non-English version of"
"Microsoft Word installed, or if, after a fresh installation of Microsoft Word,
"you haven't run Word at least once before installing the Word Plugin."
"Instructions to manually install the Word plugin can be found at"

I guess it doesn't hurt to extend this error message somewhat, even though we do not know exactly what versions of Word are affected (maybe it's just 2007).
  • I'm having this exact same problem right now, and can't seem to fix it.

When trying to install the word plugin I get the following error message:
"The installer could not find the correct folder in which to install the Zotero
Plugin for Word. This generally occurs if you run a non-English version of
Microsoft Word. Instructions to manually install the Word plugin can be
    found at http://www.zotero.org/documentation/microsoft_word_integration".

I do have an English Word version. I do have a STARTUP folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12. I am using Windows 7, Zotero 1.0.10, and I downloaded the latest word plugin (1.0b3). Any suggestions on how to fix this?
  • I'm getting the reply that it can't install any of the plug ins because they aren't compatible with firefox 4.0.1. What version of firefox do i need to be using?

kazspence: This thread dates from 2008 and is entirely unrelated to your question. Please start new threads for new issues.

All Zotero 2.1–compatible plugins are compatible with Firefox 4 (which is out of date, anyway—you should be using Firefox 5).
