Zotero stand alone add-in causes Word for Mac 2011 to crash

Hi all,

I'm working on a large document in Word for Mac 2011 (over 20MB with image inserts and customised template and styles) and frequently have crashes when I save. Advice from a microsoft forum led to me thinking this was caused by the zotero plug in (because crashes ceased when I disabled it) and I followed advice by installing the zotero stand alone and automatic add in (zotero.dot loaded in global templates and add-ins) however I am still getting word crashes, albeit less frequently.

This is the error message I get: 'You cannot save while the file is in use by another process. Try saving the file with a new name'.

I'm then able to save the file with the same name to the same place but get another message: 'This is not a valid file name. Try one or more of the following: Check the path to make sure it was typed correctly. Select a file from the list of files and folders'

Please help - this re-labelling every time I save is very time consuming and frustrating!
  • Zotero only communicates with Word when inserting citations (and even when inserting citations, it shouldn't be possible for Zotero to crash Word, since all communication happens via AppleScript). A crash on save is definitely a bug in Word, and our ability to troubleshoot it is extremely limited.

With that said, if the crashes actually cease when you disable Zotero.dot, you could access Zotero functionality from the Script menu instead. The add-in for Zotero Standalone is exactly the same as the add-in for Zotero for Firefox; it would be extremely surprising if there are any differences in the way Word interacts with them.
