Edited citations don't change when altered in Zotero

I have several citations and a reference list in OOo.
I have noticed that if I change the title in Zotero & then do a refresh in OOo the title in the reference is updated. The same is true for author details.
However, if I edit the citation when adding it and then change the author details and then do a refresh in OOo, the details are updated in the reference list but not in the in-text citation.
Why is the link lost when making edits to the citation?
Why is the ability to edit citations allowed if the link is lost?

The reason I use the edit functionality is to change a citation from (Smith, 2008) to Smith (2008). I notice there is a "suppress author" option when inserting a citation, however that means that the author must be manually inserted - not much good if the citation style is changed at a later date.
It would be good if there was an option to insert the citation as "indirect" (perhaps the default option) ie (Smith, 2008) or "direct" ie Smith (2008). Perhaps this functionality already exists and I have not found it.
