Zotero makes Word count disfunctional

I'm doing a Major Essay using Zotero in Microsoft Word, but when I go to check the word count by highlighting a paragraph for example, it doesn't give me the word count on the bottom left like it would normally. I noted that it's the Zotero footnote that is causing the issue. So to get around it I highlight my paragraph up to the point that I hit a footnote, then I have to note the word count, then highlight the next section, and keep adding the word count manually after each reference. This can't be right??? Any ideas how I can fix this?
  • I get a similar problem with my computer, and ended up doing the same sort of thing. I found also if you selected word count from the Review tab, it sometimes worked. But i never managed to fix it.

My girlfriend is also having problems with the word count. Though it's not the same as the above. For some reason some of the citations add a ridiculous amount of words. For example, a paragraph containing around 200 words suddenly becomes 500 words when a zotero field containing "(2012)" is highlighted also. It's odd because if you just highlight the field it appears as 1 word, but when you highlight the whole sentance, it's suddenly 300 words.

Can anyone help us? Any sort of advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Alec
  • What version of Word? At least for the second issue, it sounds like your copy of Word is counting Zotero field codes (which you can verify if you right-click on the citation and click Toggle Field Codes) in the word count, but I can't reproduce that in Word 2011. This would seem to be a Word bug, but Simon (who wrote the plugins) might have further thoughts.
  • The version of word she's using is Professional 2010. I think you might be right about that, because after I used the classic IT trick of restarting the computer, the word count began to behave correctly!

I think as you say, there must just be a bug that causes word to count the codes instead!

    Thanks for you speedy reply.

Keep up the good word, Zotero's helped me no end!
