Errors when changing document preferences

I am having a problem trying to change document preferences from Chicago full note to Chicago author-date style. When I set new document preferences, Zotero creates the correct in-text author-date citations only for 3 of my sources (strangely, they are the three sources I've most recently added to the document). For the rest of the citations, it keeps the endnote and endnote is changed to author-date style.

I just downloaded the most recent Zotero plugin for Word, so I think I'm all up to date with my software. Any ideas for how to fix this problem?
  • just a guess - but try changing to a different citation style like "Nature" and see if that makes it out of the footnotes.

Also, what Word version and OS?
  • Tried changing the document to Nature and it did not do away with the footnotes, even for the 3 sources that switched correctly to Chicago author-date style. It just re-formatted the citations within footnotes.

I am using Word 2008 for Mac (Version 12.3.4) and Mac OS X (Version 10.6.8).
  • Were the citations were entered into footnotes opened with Word? (If so, their position is fixed in the document, and you'll need to move them into the main text manually.)
  • I'm not sure I understand your question. Most citations were added via Zotero's "Add Citation" function. They're are a few endnotes that were added via Word (i.e. a note to give further explanation to supplement in-text info), but most notes in the document were created via Zotero.

When you use "Add Citation" to insert a reference, you can either place the cursor in the main text, or in a footnote that you have opened manually in Word. In the former case, Zotero will automatically create a footnote and place the reference inside it. For automagically created footnotes, switching to an in-text style like Nature will remove the footnote and place the reference directly into the text.

In the latter case, the footnote is a fixed feature of the document, and switching styles will only change the form of the reference, leaving it inside the note. From the symptoms you describe, it sounds like that may be the cause.
  • Most of the footnotes were created by using "Add Citation" with the cursor in the main text and then Zotero created the note. There are a couple footnotes when I manually opened a footnote in Word to type out a longer explanation, but most citations were created automagically.
  • It's very odd behaviour then, and I'm stumped. I don't think we've seen this before.
  • same here.
It probably makes sense to try to run through these:

    since something is clearly broken.
I'd also be curious if you can replicate this in a new document or if this is just your existing one.
