Why can't a report have an editor?

I would like to cite http://www.ipcc.ch/publications_and_data/publications_ipcc_fourth_assessment_report_wg1_report_the_physical_science_basis.htm. It explicitly says to cite the 8 *editors* (no authors). There are no series editors here.

It's clearly a report, I don't see how it fits under any other item type, except the catchall "document", which is missing a bunch of other useful fields, like "series title" (which in this case would be "Climate Change 2007: The Physical Science Basis").

There seem to me to be a bunch of these odd restrictions on various item types that are not necessary. Is there any way of working around this, that retains sensible metadata? Will these field options be more general in the future?
  • yes fields will be added, and yes, that likely includes editors for reports, yes and no - fields will be added and extended to item types in the future, but not all fields will be available for all item types on purpose. (This all takes time for a number of reasons, one important one being that it requires changes in the sync structure).
    And no there is no viable workaround short of citing this as a book (which might work nicely).
  • Ok, thanks. Yeah, citing as a book does work, and I guess is technically also correct. Just seems less appropriate. How do the field limitations for each item get decided?
  • most of the basis for the decision making process is this:
    https://github.com/ajlyon/zotero-bits/issues

    editor for reports e.g. is here: https://github.com/ajlyon/zotero-bits/issues/31

    This isn't final and you can post to the thread pinned to the top of the forum with additional thoughts and requests (though please read ajlyon's initial post on the first page for guidance) - that's a better place for an initial discussion, once we've got some basic understanding we can move it to a github ticket.
  • Is there a reason why the Report type still has no editor role? It would definitely be needed - see e.g. this publication: http://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/fund-reports/2017/may/international-profiles
  • New fields and item types are coming in Zotero 5.1. These changes have been waiting on necessary backend changes that came in Zotero 5.0.

    In the mean time, you can enter editors for Reports in the Extra field like this:
    editor: Last || First, I.
