zotero Standalone 3.0 and Word for Mac 2011

Hello everyone,

as of today, my new and first iMac arrived. After I installed Word for Mac, zotero Standalone 3.0 and the Safari Connector, I copied my "old" library (2.1) to the mac and set the folder as zotero's library (after that, all my documents appeared in zotero as usual). I was eager to try out if everything worked. Well - it didn't.
Whenever I try to insert a citation in my document or just set the document preferences, I receive the following error message:

[Exception... "'The operation couldn't be completed.
(OSStatus error -1708.)
@[setProperty:document.m:1150]' when calling method:
[zoteroIntegrationDocument::setDocumentData]"
nsresult: "0x8057001e
(NS_ERROR_XPC_JS_THREW_STRING)" location: "JS frame
:: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/integration.js ::
<TOP_LEVEL> :: line 1099" data: no]

I tried searching the forums but found no thread dealing with my particular problem (I did find error messages similar to the one i transcribed below, but the numbers were not the same).
Has anyone experienced the same problem? And/or can anyone help me with this? Being all new to Mac, I have not the slightest clue how to proceed.

Thanks a lot in advance

  • Hey Rintze,

    thanks for the hint. I tried both versions, neither worked. One thing I noted though, is that in the folder Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2011 named in the entry, there is only one file calles "OfficeSync Prefs" - is that the OLE Registration Database?

    Thanks again - any other ideas?

    Cheers

  • It seems like the "OLE Registration Database" file (which should have exactly that name) can exists in multiple places. See the instructions at https://www.dessci.com/en/support/mathtype/tsn/tsn140.htm
  • Hello again Rintze,

    thank you so much for your quick answers - indeed, I found the file in the respective folder - yet, when I delete it and proceed as described in the link, there is no new OLE Database established once I started and quit Word.
    Now when I try to insert a citation, there is an error message saying that Visual Basic for Applications couldn't be started, and I should check if it was installed. This pops up about 10 times, then the window for setting the document preferences appears as usual, after which the error message transcribed in my first post pops up again.

    Problem: Apart from re-installing with the CD and seeing the checkmark next to "Visual Basic for Application" I do not know how to check whether it is actually on my HD... Sorry for being such a rookie... Can you help me again?

    Cheers

  • @Simon might be better qualified to help you from this point onward. In the meantime, try to retrigger the error, get a Report ID, and post the ID number in this thread.
  • Hey Rintze,

    thanks a lot. I retriggered the error. The Report ID is 1031350009.

    This time I counted: When I click on "add citation", the error concerning Visual Basic for Applications not being installed appears 23 (!) times, then, after I confirmed the settings, the error message appears again 2 times, then the Error Report which you can find under the mentioned ID.

    Cheers

  • Hello again / here I go again,

    today, I removed Office for Mac from my Mac completely and reinstalled it, this time with the default installation. At first, this seemed to be the solution: Word can now load Visual Basic for Applications and Clicking on "Add Citation" immediately opens the document preferences dialogue. I can also add citations.

    When I try to insert a bibliography, however, I receive the following message:

    "'The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error -1708.) @[setBibliographyStyle:document.m:872]' when calling method: [zoteroIntegrationDocument::setBibliographyStyle]" {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/integration.js" line: 1672}]

    I sent this error report under the number 1211941346.

    Do you have any idea how I could fix this?
    I have not found this error message with a forum search.

    Thanks a lot

  • Same problem here.

    I use Firefox v15.0.1 with Zotero v3.0.8 (Firefox plugin) on a Mac OSX v10.7.5 and Word 2011 v14.2.3. The Zotero toolbar in Word does not work at all (pressing the buttons does not do anything) and when I use the Script menu (Script/Zotero/Add Citation), it prompts me to select the citation style, I click OK, but then get the following error:

    JavaScript Error: "'The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error -1708.) @[setProperty:document.m:1150]' when calling method: [zoteroIntegrationDocument::setDocumentData]" {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/integration.js" line: 901}]

    Reported under ID: 414636020

    Would be great if somebody could help us out. :)

    tb82mz: Word is refusing to change the line spacing for the bibliography, which Zotero doesn't like. Does this happen even in a new document?

    k3rmit: Have you tried the steps at http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting#cannot_insert_citation_into_any_document_with_word_2011
  • yes, i have, but unfortunately it did not change anything. :(
  • Hey Simon,

    thanks for the explanation. Yes, this occurs even in new documents. Do you have any idea how to fix it?

    Thanks a lot
    cheers

  • UPDATE: solved

    Hey Simon,

    I just found out that this problem has to do with my zotero-style. I wrote the code myself and obviously there must be a problem with the line spacing in the code. When I choose another style everything works out fine.
    So I guess I'll just use that for the time being and fix the style later.

    Thanks

  • (my suspicion would be that you may have an invalid value for line-spacing: not that that attribute only accepts positive integers).
  • Hey adam,

    indeed - I had set it to "1". Once I took out the line everything worked out fine.
    Thanks for the hint!

  • I tried selecting different styles, but this did unfortunately not change anything on my end. :( Any further ideas?

    k3rmit: the issue you're having is unrelated to tb82mz's newer error. Your error indicates that AppleScript isn't working in Word at all, and we aren't aware of any solutions for this beyond the steps on the page I linked to above.
