Zotero BibTeX export produces invalid files

Whenever I export to BibTex it produces an "empty" file like this:

@misc{__????
},

@misc{__????-1
},
It's hard to guess what happens, but the UI still shows all entries as supposed.
Any help on this is highly appreciated. I don't mind attaching my library and settings to a bug report, if applicable.
  • This is what happens when something doesn't work right.
    Generally the Bibtex Translator works, so this is specific to your library or a local translator problem.

    To exclude the latter: First, try to see if the same thing happens while exporting a very standard item. If so, try resetting your translators from the advanced tab of the Zotero preferences and see if that helps. Also do you have any add-ons installed that may alter BibTeX output? Like AutoZotBib or so?

    If a single, regular item works, it would be helpful if you could narrow this down for us - try exporting bibtex in chunks and see what doesn't work. Once you have found a chunk - ideally not much larger than 20 items - that don't export, export them to Zotero RDF (no notes/attachments) open the .rdf file with a texteditor (notepad, textedit) and copy the entire content to a site like pastebin.com or gist.github.com - provide the link here and we'll take a look.
  • Adam, thank you for looking into this.

    I have rest all translators (I don't think I ever had anything changed in there) and disabled all Firefox add-ons except Zotero and "Ubuntu Firefox Modifications" but nothing changed. Still the same invalid output :/

    It appears it does not depend on a specific library item, since exporting a very old one that has been successfully exported before still does *not* work.

    So I tried the following:
    I checked the Database integrity with the Zotero advanced tab: No Errors
    I have then enabled logging and exported a single item (named "The Web Origin Concept") to bibtex: No error, but invalid file, as above

    Then I exported another single item (named "Robust defenses for cross-site request forgery") to RDF: Erorr Message "An error occurred while trying to export the selected file." shows.

    The debugging output has been submitted to pastebin, see here:
    http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=sw3JpnGv

    Do you have any further suggestions? I am not sure whether the log output is helpful. If not, I can provide a log file for the whole Zotero run.

    I see what's going on:
    Zotero's current translator infrastructure isn't quite compatible with Firefox 17 - I believe most of this is fixed/in place in the trunk, so if you want to test this out, you can install the trunk xpi:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/dev_builds#zotero_trunk
    but take those warnings very seriously - the trunk is really not intended for regular work (though people do use it - and you're running a FF alpha, too), but error reports on it are very much welcome (make sure to mention your exact verion number from "About" in the gears menu).

    Zotero will have a new, compatible release out for the final release of FF 17 on, I believe, November 20th.
  • Ah, yes! That's it. I will dare the unthinkable and try out trunk :-)
  • it's possible that this isn't completely fixed yet or that the trunk xpi hasn't been built for the latest commit.
  • I tried trunk again, this time it works.
    My thesis is no longer doomed. Hooray! :)

    ...and it's broken again, not repairable by using zotero trunk

    User Agent is "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:17.0) Gecko/17.0 Firefox/17.0"
  • Perhaps, for the purposes of your thesis, you should use the stable/released versions of both firefox and zotero?
  • That's handling the symptoms, not the actual cause, right? ;)

    But don't worry about my thesis, I am just being dramatic.
    If you need debug output again, just shoot...
  • Regarding the empty/invalid BibTeX entries. My speculation is that you are trying to export standalone attachments and/or notes rather than items (i.e. Journal Articles, Book Sections, Books, etc.). At least that is the exact output you would get.

    Either way, an updated version of the BibTeX translator will not attempt to export standalone notes/attachments. You can wait for the translator to update automatically within 24 hours or update manually via Preferences -> General -> Update Now. Try exporting with the updated translator and see if you still get the empty entries.

    RDF translator might be failing for the same reason. I will investigate that further.
