Very new! Difference between Library and whats on my pc

Okay, be patient with me. I'm very new at all things Zotero and 'cloud' etc.

I have downloaded Zotero onto my home pc and built up a substantial number of Collections/citations/pdfs etc.

This morning I went searching for some associated newspaper articles on ProQuest and by clicking the little symbol as usual, assumed the citations etc were being added to the same place. But now I find them in a Library online and not in my own Collections.

What the?? Dont understand the difference between the two areas and dont understand how to grab the ones in the Library and put them into my own Collections.

Also, a bit confused about how I can access my Collections from another PC - do I have to sign up for an expensive Zotero plan? Or is there an alternative?
  • You probably want to read through this for general info:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/sync

I can't tell you exactly what happened, but my theory is that you are running Zotero Standalone with a Chrome connector - is that right?
In that case, you may have had Zotero closed when you imported from Zotero standalone, in which case Zotero will try to save directly to the online version of your library (though you'll have to authorize that at least once - there is absolutely no way this happens otherwise).

On getting items from the online version of your library to your local copy as well as on using Zotero on difference computers, see the link above.
On "expensive" - computer software doesn't write itself.
  • Thanks for the explanation - I'll make sure I've got "my" Zotero open next time. Have just Synced and that all worked. Phew.

[Sorry, didnt mean to be ungracious re 'expensive',just finding this all a bit confusing - 52 and although IT literate, slow on the uptake of anything 'new'.]
