All my references are lost

After I reinstalled Firefox, I noticed that my Zotero app also had to be reinstalled. I did so, and saw that a terrible thing had happened: All my references are lost! Or are they still there somewhere? How do I get access to my "old" Zotero archive? Does it really disappear together with Firefox? If anybody can, please help me!

not all of it is relevant, but slim through it anyway
  • Thank you for answering! I am not really sharp on IT, so I haven't made any backups at all. I didn't think it was necessary. I have also accessed my references in Zotero from another computer where I haven't reinstalled Firefox. Does this make any difference, or have I lost all my references?
  • a couple of things:
    1. There is a good chance your old Zotero data is still on the computer - it depends on how exactly you re-installed Firefox - and the page Aurimas links to can help you find it - anyone with some basic IT skills would be able to help you look for that, so if you have a friend or someone at University, that person doesn't need to be a Zotero expert.
This should be your first option.

    2. If you accessed your items on another computer that means they're likely synced to the Zotero server, which means you haven't lost anything except perhaps some attachments - you can check by clicking on "My Library" on the top left of this webpage. If you see your Zotero References you should be fine - you can just set-up sync in Zotero again and your references will be restored.

    3. Especially if you're not very IT savvy, you need to get on setting up automatic, (at least) daily back-up of your entire harddisk, now. There is software that makes that very easy and convenient for you and there is absolutely no excuse not to use it.
  • Dear Adam Smith,
Thank you so much for your encouraging answer! I will find someone who can help me!
I will not forget to make backup in the future!
