APA translator not working

Hi,

For some time now (i.e., several months), I've been unable to import items from American Psychological Association web sites (PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, etc.). I get the standard "An error occurred while saving this item" message. There's nothing in the "Known Translator Issues" page about this, and I haven't found any previous posts on the issue. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Craig

note that if you get to step 11 we'll need an error report, sample URL, as well as which Zotero & browser you're using.

    Please follow 3, 4, 5, 6, 11 at http://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues

Also see http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/23810/?Focus=128135#Comment_128135 Perhaps you could provide us with some information to improve the translator.

Edit: Sorry for being redundant. adamsmith beat me to it.
  • Thanks for the replies. The troubleshooting didn't help -- everything checked out OK, but I'm still getting the errors.

    I'm using:
    Zotero Standalone version 3.0.8
    Chrome connector version 3.0.8.1
    Chrome browser version 21.0.1180.89 (current)

Sample URL (you can delete the ".proxy.uchicago.edu" part if you need to: http://psycnet.apa.org.proxy.uchicago.edu/journals/rev/80/4/252/

As for error reports, it doesn't appear that the problem I'm having is getting logged. There are, however, a couple of other errors.

Report ID from Zotero Standalone: 955191872

In the Chrome extension settings, the following appears in the error box:

[JavaScript Error: "Object false has no method 'replace'" {file: "chrome-extension://ekhagklcjbdpajgpjgmbionohlpdbjgc/zotero/translation/translate.js" line: 1074}]

[JavaScript Error: "Object false has no method 'replace'" {file: "chrome-extension://ekhagklcjbdpajgpjgmbionohlpdbjgc/zotero/translation/translate.js" line: 1074}]

[JavaScript Error: "undefined is not a function" {file: "chrome-extension://ekhagklcjbdpajgpjgmbionohlpdbjgc/zotero.js" line: 95}]
  • Forgot to mention: that last Chrome extension error occurs when I click the "Report Errors" button.
  • This works on my end with both Chrome and Firefox, but I'm not going through your proxy, so that might be causing issues.

Does the import work if you don't use a proxy? I.e. just from http://psycnet.apa.org/journals/rev/80/4/252/ I understand that the PDFs would not be importing (though currently they don't anyway)

@Simon or Dan, In the translator we use a hard-coded url to fetch the RIS file. I'm not too keen on how proxy detection/redirection work in terms of doPost, doGet, and processDocuments, but would it help if instead of using 'http://psycnet.apa.org/index.cfm?fa=search.export' we went with '/index.cfm?fa=search.export'.

"An error occurred while saving this item"

I get that same error from time to time if I haven't opened zotero in FF and let it connect to zotero once. Once it does that. Error msg goes away!
  • When Zotero is not open, the Chrome connector saves directly to zotero.org server, which introduces even more complexity to this process.

I have tried what you describe and I cannot replicate the error, but as you say, it is not very consistent. If you could submit an error report when this happens and post the Report ID here (along with the URL you were saving from) we can further diagnose this.

Simon or Dan, is there anything in craigjoseph's error report other than the errors he posted above?

    No errors in there.

Simon would have to advise on best URL practices.
