where is my data stored?

In the general introductory material, Zotero files are said to be within the Application Data folder but they don't show up when I open that file. They have to be somewhere, but where?????
  • As noted in the FAQ, Zotero data is stored in a subdirectory of your Firefox profile.

On a Mac, you'll usually find that directory here:
    /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<randomstring>/zotero

On a Windows machine, it is most likely here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<randomstring>\zotero
  • Is this location something that can be changed via user preferences?.

I use a program called foldershare that keeps several of my folders syncrhonized across several computers (office, home1, home2). It would be great to be able to place the zotero content within one of the folders that gets synchronized so that the database would be available from either computer.

(Given the 'randomstring' in firefox folder name, it doesn't seem easy to synchronize because the randomstring would be, by definition, different on each machine, hampering synchronization.)
  • The location isn't currently something that can be customized, although we'll be adding that capability in a future release.

You can, however, rename the Firefox profile on one computer to be the same as the other. Edit the profiles.ini file in the "Firefox" directory and then rename the profile directory itself within Profiles.

After that, you should be able to use a program like FolderShare to sync either your Zotero directory or your entire Firefox profile.
  • I saved few files in a folder and now can't locate it. How do I get back my searched files? I am using Zotero standalone. Thanks
