Can Standalone and FF citations be made retroactively compatible?

I made the mistake of editing the same document with both the FF and Standalone versions of Zotero. Standalone seems to be able to read my FF citations, but FF can't read my Standalone-made citations. I noticed some older references to this problem on the forum, but they all seemed to refer to Zotero 2.x.

I was using the most recent version of Zotero and a slightly out-of-date Standalone -- 3.0.1, I think -- on a Mac running Firefox 14. I've since updated my Standalone to 3.0.8, and unchecked the "Store references in document" box, but it didn't help.

Is there any way to automatically convert the document to be compatible with both the Firefox and Standalone versions? I'm trying to get a manuscript to submission stage, and right now it looks like I'm going to have to check every single citation in it.
  • This may seem a silly question, but just in case ... when you check with gear menu -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Show Data Directory in FF and Standalone, are the two pointing at the same directory?
  • Thanks for the suggestion -- I just checked, and they appear to be the same. I'm in the process of repairing all of the citations with FF Zotero, but would definitely still like to track down an answer. (In the meantime, I'm stashing Standalone safely in the trash to avoid confusion!)

I'm not totally sure what you mean by this. Can you elaborate?

It's easy to tell if Standalone and Firefox are pointing to the same directory (which, on the same system, they should be)—you wouldn't be able to open both at once. Trying to open Zotero from Firefox when Standalone was open would just bring the Standalone window to the front. Does that happen for you?
  • Hi, Dan! Per fbennett's suggestion, I did check the directories (which matched) and I did see (I think) what you described when opening FF Zotero with Standalone open. Unfortunately, I'd worked on the document with Standalone open and Firefox closed, and vice versa.

As I wrote above, I repaired the citations with the Zotero version, and am going to stick to that version for now.

Why unfortunately? Doing that is totally fine.

I'm still not clear on what the problem was, but it sounds like you have it working now.
