2 days ago on the 16 of July I lost all references out of my Word document. I am using MacBook Pro and doing my final thesis. If I add a new reference after 16 of July all the old references are instantly removed from my bibliography. I have tried to add the citations again but they do not update. I have also tried to copy the whole text into a new document but nothing works.

Can you please fix the error so I can continue my work?
  • It seems likely that or someone else accidentally removed the field codes from your document, either by explicitly telling Zotero to remove the field codes (you'd get an explicit warning before it does this), by opening it and saving it in a word processor that doesn't handle Word fields (e.g., LibreOffice), or by pressing the key combination to remove field codes (on Mac, this is Fn+Option+Shift+F9).

You can see if the field codes are still there by setting Field shading: Always in the View pane of the Word preferences. If the citations don't appear with a gray background, it's unlikely there's anything we can do. If you do see shading around the citations, if you can send the document to support@zotero.org, we can see if we can figure out why the citations aren't getting entered into the bibliography.
