very slow in adding citations

When I add a new citation it takes upwards of 15 minutes to complete. Firefox frequently stalls and I need to force quit it. I have just under 1000 items in my library, I don't think this is too many?
Previously I was having trouble updating sources in open office after I had changed the original entry in zotero: zotero kept divorcing the open office citation from the original zotero citation. Now this is fixed, and the source updates properly, but it takes forever.
Thanks for any help or insight you can offer.
  • Does this affect all documents, or only a large document with many citations? If the latter, how many citations are in the document?

All documents are definitely slower than they used to be, but one in particular is painfully slow. It's about 35 pages, about 100 citations (this is actually the shortest of my documents with the least citations).
  • what other add-ons - Zotero related and otherwise - do you have installed? Have you tried disabling them? 1000 is a small library.
  • Only an ad block add-on, and it doesn't seem to make any difference if I disable it.
  • Fifteen minutes on a 100-cite document is pretty sluggish. We've seen poor performance on documents with 600+ references before, yours is the first report I've seen in the 100-cite range. A new version of the LibreOffice plugin is waiting in the wings. If you hold on until Zotero 3.0.8 and the plugin upgrade come out (expected imminently, within a week or so), you may find things much faster. (Would definitely be interested to hear what affect it has for you, either way.)

I've been working on this project for almost a year and zotero has been great. This is the first time I've encountered problems. But I'm afraid I only have two weeks left before it must be submitted. Should I maybe consider reinstalling everything?
  • This doesn't sound like a problem that goes away with re-installing.
Take the slow chapter and try copying the entire content of the chapter to a new Ooo document (i.e. ctrl+a, ctrl+c --> ctrl+v).
You should set a citation style in the empty/new document via "Set Document Preferences" in before pasting into it.
I don't know how likely this is to improve things, but it only takes a couple of minutes, so it's worth a try.
Also - what OS are you on and what Firefox version? For me Zotero performs _much_ better with Standalone than with Firefox, so I have them share a data directory and use Standalone when I write.
  • Although copying and pasting the entire document into a new document didn't help, deleting and readding the citations has seemed to help. Maybe the original document was somehow corrupted?
Thank you for the advice about standalone, I'm definitely going to set that up to use while I'm writing.
    Thanks for the help everyone!
