"Dead" citations after open a file with Mellel

I understand there is no plugin for Mellel, but I still have another problem I hope someon here would could help me with.

In some cases I work with Mellel on word documents with Zotero citations. When I save them as word documents and then reopen them again in Word, the Zotero's citation are not responsive anymore. The text still in place, but I can't update them.
Is there a way to go around the problem?

Any suggestion would be appreciated

Zotero by default stores citation in Word Fields - most other programs can't save these (e.g. Libre Office can't, either, even if you save as .doc). You can set this to "Bookmarks" under "Set Document Preferences" in Zotero's Word plugin and see if Mellel keeps those, but no guarantees.
If it doesn't, there's no workaround.
