storage security

Two questions: (1) Does anyone know how to find out the nature of the security features for the storage through The Corporation for Digital Scholarship? I have purchased extra space there for my files but cannot find out how the "cloud" is backed up or stored in redundant ways, etc, or what provisions there are for protection in the case of power outages and so on. (2) Does anyone know if it works or is a good idea to store copies of our own works in progress, our own writings, there? I have the idea from some of what I've read that what we upload is not terribly secure, so I don't know if this is recommended or not. Thank you.
  • FYI, Zotero Storage runs Amazon S3.
  • Thank you very much! I will look this up so I understand it better. :-)
  • Both the upload and the storage are very secure.
Upload uses ssl encryption - the standard banks and credit card companies use. As Gracile says, the files are stored on Amazon server farms, probably one of the most secure places to have your data.

While it's fine to store your own files there and there is no risk involved, Zotero storage is not recommended as a back-up solution: A good back-up system will have version control - i.e. you won't just have access to the latest version of the document, but if something goes wrong and you don't notice immediately, you can access the document as it was 1 week ago etc. Zotero isn't designed to do that, so I'd look for a more suitable solution.
  • Thank you for this additional, very helpful, information! It is VERY helpful!! -- Dawn
