Opening .csl files to edit

This seems very silly, but I'm having trouble following: "Download the style you want to edit to your computer, and open it in a (plain) text editor like Notepad on Windows, TextEdit on Mac OS X (select “Make Plain Text” under “Format”), or gedit in Linux."

I just want to fix the in text citation for the JAAD style, so that it's superscript, but I can't fix the code if I can't open it.

Unless someone else wants to edit this style to actually comply with the Journal requirements?
  • How exactly have you been trying to open the CSL style? And what is the full journal name?
  • The problem is more that I don't understand how to open it in a text style.

The style is Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
  • Try reinstalling the style from the style repository.
  • I did that, but that still doesn't allow me to fix the error in the csl file. The in-text citation style doesn't conform to the journal specifications, so I wanted to fix the style itself.
  • I changed the JAAD style to use the "Vancouver with Superscript" style format instead of that of the regular "Vancouver" style ( https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/commit/e035e51e3534eb42e18121d55d85004598f8d5d5 ), so reinstalling the JAAD style should work. If it doesn't, you can also just install the "Vancouver with Superscript" style and use that.

If you want to fix this yourself by editing the style, you need to provide more details about where you get stuck (e.g. which operating system are you using and which text editor? Do you get an error message when you try opening the style file).
  • Thanks for fixing the style. I'm apparently just not having a good computer day because Zotero won't overwrite the old csl file and I can't delete the existing one to put the new one in place. Any ideas?
  • You can reset the installed CSL styles from the Zotero preferences, maybe that will fix things (you'll have to reinstall the style after doing that): http://www.zotero.org/support/preferences/advanced
  • I manually pulled the old file off the C drive and reinstalled. It now works perfectly. Thank-you for all of your help!
