RIS files not going into collection, now there not going anywhere

w/FF 11.0, Win7 x64/sp1, Zotero Standalone 3.0.7

No additional icons ever appear in my browser's address bar, no matter what journal's page I'm on, and nothing in the addon bar at the bottom right. I checked the conflicts page and nothing I'm using is listed there.

Clicking on the Zotero link in the citation pages of journals used to open the dialog "You have chose to open "zotero-citations.ris"

What should FF do with this file?

I say 'used to' because after importing a few .ris files to ZT Standalone, and they were NOT going into the collection selected, on the next attempt to "Open with..." I clicked the Browse button and selected Zotero and checked the 'always' check box and now nothing appears in any Zotero collection.

Before setting the "open with" option, I had let Firefox save it to Zotero, and at least it was being saved into a new collection, although not to the collection that was highlighted, so I would have manually move every one.

Now that I selected FF to open with Zotero, I'm getting NOTHING.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Barry
  • Let's leave the RIS files aside for a moment.
You realize that when using Zotero Standalone with Firefox, you also need Zotero for Firefox installed, right?
Then, close Zotero Standalone for a moment.
Now, do you see a Zotero icon on this page?

Start with http://www.zotero.org/support/kb/no_status_bar_icon — it sounds like perhaps Zotero for Firefox (which should work in connector mode if Standalone is open) isn't properly installed.
on the next attempt to "Open with..." I clicked the Browse button and selected Zotero and checked the 'always' check box and now nothing appears in any Zotero collection.
I don't know why that's happening, but you should be able to clear that setting from the Firefox preferences. I don't know why it'd be different on Zotero's end between manual and automatic opening, though—if anything that sounds like a Firefox bug.

Standalone doesn't have any way of knowing where the file came from, and I don't think just opening a RIS file on your computer should dump its contents into whatever the current collection happens to be. It already prompts when importing a RIS file that way, so it probably should let you choose the destination collection at the same time. (This is related to, though slightly different from, Import from Clipboard.)

(There's a more general question of how collection handling should work when items are saved from the connectors. I'm not going to get into that here, but we've been talking about some possibilities, with the basic idea being that the current mechanism, with no indication of where they're going, isn't great.)
  • Thanks for your replies:

adam and Dan, you've identified one problem:

I don't have the addon installed. I did at first, but nothing was happening, so I removed it.

Are there clear instructions somewhere that both are required?

Which should be installed first, or doesn't it matter?

Also, I don't know of any FF Preferences. There are the Options, but I don't see anything there related to Zotero.

Can you find it in your FF somewhere?

Check the Applications pane of the Firefox preferences.
  • Ok, thanks for the help. I think it is working properly now.
