Syncing Problems due to tags...

Hello,
I have the following problem: Upon opening Zotero, be it the Standalone version, or embedded into Firefox, the syncing produces the following message.

"One or more Zotero tags have been added to and/or removed from items on multiple computers since the last sync. The different sets of tags have been combined. View the Error Console for the full list of such changes."

Thereafter Zotero goes back to syncing and keeps getting me this message, so it stays in a loop, preventing me from using Zotero at all. What's curious, is that I haven't even used Zotero from different computers.

Here is the ID: 310483935 from my problem submission...

Would appreciate it, if you could get back on this asap. It's too bad that this is happening during finals...

Thanks in advance,
bert

    edit: sorry misread:
Turn off automatic syncing (sync tab of the Zotero preferences) for the time being so you can work regularly.

    First, upgrade to 3.0.7. (You're using 3.0.5.)

But also, that message isn't an error. The error is whatever happens after it. There's no Zotero error in that report.

So upgrade, reproduce the error, tell us what the actual message is (which you can see when you click the sync error icon), and provide another Report ID.
  • Hello,

Alright, so I updated Zotero, turned off automatic sync. I can work with Zotero as long as I don't sync. Once I push the sync button, I get the same message that I quoted above. I press OK and Zotero goes back into this infinite loop, where it tries to sync and spits out this message. No error icon appears.

Hence, the situation is the same as last night, and I can't give you additional information, since Zotero does not produce any other error message than what I have already given you...

Thanks in advance for your help,
    Bert

I press OK and Zotero goes back into this infinite loop, where it tries to sync and spits out this message. No error icon appears.
With auto-sync off, Zotero shouldn't be able to sync more than twice on its own between clicks on the sync icon.

In any case, provide another Report ID (before restarting Firefox after this occurs).
  • On Zotero Standalone:
Even though auto-sync off, it stills enters an infinite loop. Here is the Report ID: 277026792. As I said, I only get the pop up saying:

"One or more Zotero tags have been added to and/or removed from items on multiple computers since the last sync. The different sets of tags have been combined. View the Error Console for the full list of such changes."

But Zotero goes back into syncing and does not produce sync-error icon.

    Same thing happens on Firefox...

Can you provide a Debug ID that covers from the beginning of syncing to the third time that message appears?

Hmm, this is actually a strange error that we've never seen before—and it does appear to result in an infinite sync loop.

I've added some additional logging on the server to try to debug this. Could you trigger another couple sync loops and then post here once you do? No need for another error report.
  • Alright, I ran again a few loops, fyi...
Maybe some contextualization that might help:

    1) The day that problem started to appear, I had been pulling numerous sources from IDEAS/RePeC. Maybe, I did too many too fast?

    2) I also primarily get the sources through Google Chrome.

    3) I had previously the Zotfile plug-in that has stopped working as well.

    Thanks in advance,
  • Alright. It seems, it must have been Zotfile. I disabled it, and everything seems to run smoothly now...
    Thanks anyway...

Disabling something on its own isn't conclusive. Does the problem return if you reenable it? (And did you have ZotFile installed in both Firefox and Standalone?)
  • Alright, I enabled it again and everything (adding new references from various sources, syncing etc.) seems to be working smoothly...

I had only installed Zotfile on Firefox. I wasn't aware it was available for Standalone as well. So Zotero not having worked properly on both Firefox and Standalone is peculiar indeed.

In any case, I guess I am happy with the current situation. I guess you guys should take a look at it, if this should turn out to be a common, or recurring problem.

Thanks for the help, really appreciated the support...

OK, great. Let us know if it happens again.
  • Hi,

I am having problems syncing. To be honest, I haven't been trying to sync in a long time so there may be many problems involved. I am running 3.0.8 version of Zotero and the program is working just fine as long as I don't try to sync. When I do I get the followng message:

    method: [nsIDOMEventListener::handleEvent]" nsresult: "0x8057001c (NS_ERROR_XPC_JS_THREW_JS_OBJECT)" location: "<unknown>" data: no]"]

[JavaScript Error: "[Exception... "''Extra' field value 'Access: http://ark.cdlib.org/ark:/13030/ft409nb30v...' too long' when calling method: [nsIDOMEventListener::handleEvent]" nsresult: "0x8057001e (NS_ERROR_XPC_JS_THREW_STRING)" location: "<unknown>" data: no]"]

    Error report 1326694586

    Thanks.

Sara: The error message tells you the problem. You have an item with an 'Extra' value that's too long. Search for that item and fix it.
