APSA--fix book chapter error

Hi,
I just downloaded the most recently updated (Apr 3) APSA citation style and noticed that the citation for an chapter in an edited collection is incorrect.

Specifically, there should be no "p." before listing the pages of the chapter being referenced. It should list the numbers only. In other words, it should look like this:

Donaldson, Lex. 1996. “The Normal Science of Structural Contingency Theory.” In Handbook of Organization Studies, eds. Stewart Clegg, Cynthia Hardy, and Walter R. Nord. London: Sage, 57-77.
  • that's correct. I won't get to this right away, but I'll fix it when I get a chance.
(Checking this I noticed that APSR actually isn't following the style in a number of ways - we'll likely need a separate APSR style (e.g. APSR doesn't use any page ranges for book chapters) - which does make you wonder why they put out a style manual in the first place...)
  • Hi,
I didn't notice too many other errors in APSA, but I do know APSA and APSR are often separated due to the publishing requirements of the latter (which, ironically, are noted in the style manual.) APSA is 90% Chicago Author-Date, with a few idiosyncratic modifications. However, since their style manual is from 2006, I have been urged to reference the most recent CMS if I have questions.

2 other issues I did find, however, were the formats of the Conference paper and Working Paper citations. Both of these "come out" looking like Journal articles!

Finally (not to be too demanding) I tried to use the updated Chicago Annotated Bibliography style but, when I cut and pasted my references, no abstracts came through. :-( It was a horrible jumbled mess of "notes," but no abstracts.

    Thanks for helping with this!
  • You should mention that you're using Mendeley... (Zotero doesn't have a "Working Paper" item type).

    /rant
I feel cheated when people using Mendeley come here and don't even bother to mention that. It's gotta be obvious that it's worth noting that you're not using Zotero when posting in the Zotero support forum. Not doing this to me smells of deliberate deception.
I am particularly annoyed by that because the Mendeley folks with their swanky London start-up offices have so far contributed diddly-squat to CSL and are happy to outsource their customer support to open-source idealists.

But while you're here - don't use Mendeley. It's not suitable for author-date styles: http://feedback.mendeley.com/forums/4941-mendeley-feedback/suggestions/197476-fix-implement-exlude-author-year-in-the-wor

and their whole word processor integration is about 2 generations behind Zotero (and yes, they copied the code for that, too).

I'm happy to fix style errors for all CSL users regardless of the software you use and it's fine to report them here, but please have the decency to indicate if you're not using Zotero. /rant over.
  • Um, I'm very sorry, however, I'm not using Mendeley. I actually switched from Mendeley to Zotero a few months ago. I used the term "working paper" because that's what the item was titled. As God is my witness, I'll never use that term again (or post feedback, thanks.)
  • sorry about this then - I guess I've had to deal with that one too many times. W
orking papers should be "reports" in Zotero - I thought we had those covered in APSA, but I can double-check.
  • book chapters and presentations are now fixed in APSA. Reports/Working papers should have been correct all along.
