Error -1728@[selectField:/Users/simon/Desktop/Development

My computer crashed a while back and I am in the middle of writing a book. I have pretty much reconstituted the missing parts of my Zotero library.
In the meantime my software has been upgraded with the new hard drive: so now in Mac OS 10.6.8, Firefox 11, Microsoft Office 2011, and Zotero 3.0.3. (Was using Microsoft Office 2008 before crash).
Problem is that I cannot get the reconstituted library to sink with the document citations - of which there are almost 140 for the chapter in question. It even led to my Firefox bugging out, which I completely dumped and then rebuilt, reinstalling zotero. I have tried repasting the document, duplicating it, I have reassigned every single citation in the document with the new Library at Zotero's prompting and still it gives me a long error message each time, will not let me change formats, or enter new citations. At wit's end. Can anyone please help?

Thanks!

Jennifer
  • How did you "reconstitute" your library?
  • Hello Dan,

Some of it had been exported and I had a copy of it. The rest I reconstituted by going back and entering the parts that got lost manually or by capturing the reference on Worldcat and the relevant journal databases.
  • You don't have an actual backup of your Zotero data directory? Were you not syncing with the Zotero server before the crash?
  • Yes, I know, incredibly stupid, but I was not syncing.

Now whole thing is synched in my account.

And, until now, I had been routinely exported my directory into a folder called Library in My Documents, until November, when I had to stop work on the book in any case. I retained about 80% of the library. I had a backup of this which is what I used to reconstitute the library I am using now.
  • OK. Provide a Report ID after reproducing the error.
  • Hey Dan,

Thanks very much. Below is the exact error message I have received 3 times, the only change being the line #.

    Exception "The operation couldn't be completed (OSS status error-1728@[selectField:/Users/simon/Desktop/Development/PS/zotero_word_for_mac_integration/build/SRC/Field.n:300]' when callng method:[zoteroIntegrationField::select]"nsresult:"OX8057001e (NS_ERROR_XPC_JS_THREW_STRING)" location: "JSFRAME::chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/integration.js::<TOP_LEVEL>::line 1069" data:no]

I am standing by in case you need more information.

    Thanks again,

    Jennifer
  • Would you mind sending the document to support@zotero.org?
  • Will do.

    Thanks...

  • I'm still looking at this, but my hunch is that it has something to do with the fact that the document appears to have both footnotes and endnotes. I'll fix this, but for now you might try converting one to the other by following these steps.
  • Hey Simon,

I copied the document and then went into my document and tried to rationalize the footnotes into endnotes. The program converted the notes, and I changed the numbering to roman numerals, but I still can't add footnotes. And in fact now when I try to, the zotero toolbox disapears and the Insert function of my Word program goes pale. I quit word and reloaded it to see if that helped, but the same thing keeps happening.

I will recopy the original and see if I get better results if I try again.
  • Hello again,

I just did the whole thing again, with the same results. I did not even add a new endnote, I just attempted to edit and existing one, and each time the toolbox disappears and the insert box in word fades to tell me its inoperative.

Sorry this is such a pain, but I have now stockpiled another twenty references I can't add to the text and I am trying to get it ready to send to the publisher...
